The best anime about the apocalypse. Life after the apocalypse

The world is going to hell. Blood, betrayal, violence are natural. Mutations, robots, superpowers are necessary for the genre. No story has more than a hundred episodes. Some anime on the list are already cults, others are solid followers. But most importantly: each of them offers its own special a vision of what could happen to humanity and its universe as a result of a cataclysm or delirium of the authors’ imagination.

What did the creators do during the off-season of their title project? We came up with a similar story about the bloody railway.

Situation at Kabaneri Iron Fortress really looks like Titans. In a world of small station towns connected by rails, the Industrial Revolution took the air the virus gets in, turning people into Kabane ("corpses" in Japanese).

The boars are covered with iron skin, protecting the only weak point is the heart, and one after another they fill the cities, converting the local population into their own kind. For help ordinary people come Kabaneri(hybrids of “corpses” and people). The main character turns out to be the nerd Ikoma, who accidentally became a Kabaneri. Corpse removal team rides on a powerful armored locomotive through a destroyed world towards the capital - the only place, where it is supposedly completely safe. But along the way it’s not easy. Resident Evil”, “28 Days Later”, “I, Legend”, the list of “what did I see again?” is long... But the anime looks like a breeze, in many ways thanks to the railway steam-punk setting. So fans "Attack on Titan", charge!

Amy Lee seems to be exploring the mysteries of the world and her own mental state no worse than Rick Deckard from Blade Runner.

The ozone layer has reached its limit, now people have to hide under domes in special isolated towns. The society is clearly organized: each individual is assigned a robot assistant(a kind of personal lawyer “what is allowed and what is not allowed”). But here's the thing robots begin to catch a disease - the Cogito virus, from which gradually lose their minds. Riel Mayer is investigating all this viral fuss and in the process she almost goes crazy. Who controls whom? reveals social problems of humanity from the subtle, mental side. This anime has long become a classic Necessarily to view for lovers of a dark cybernetic atmosphere and female version badass Harrison Ford.

Punked carbon trash in big complete desert, which Japan eventually became (many, many, many years later).

Main character - antihero by nickname, accomplice who does not know honor and conscience, who handles weapons not only in a “tough” manner, but also in a “load yourself and fire bullets while I have a cocktail or two.” "Hermit" has the unique reputation of being the most lustful person in the area, forgetting about business and even his own life at the sight of huge female breast in uniform. Unlike previous representatives of the genre, the anime "Desert Rat" doesn't force antihero save the world, and wildly trashy tells about his daily work. An ideal option to spend a day or two under delicious action with a touch of the wild wild west, at the same time becoming more proficient in survival skills (you never know, he’ll end up in the desert).

"The Last Seraph"

Vampires, demons, friendship, teenagers, shonen.

Again virus. Survived only children under 13 years old, and immediately found themselves under the fangs of vampires. Vampires don't kill them, only blood is periodically pumped out. In return, they provide minimal living conditions. But it is boy, who doesn’t like all this, and he develops an escape plan with his brother. No one is saved except him.

Once free, it turns out that the virus is no longer there, the world is in ruins, and the surviving people are at war with vampires. Main character Yuichiro joins the squad"demonic" people, not knowing that his brother, Michaela, survived but was turned into a vampire. Almost a classic batch in the style of "Soul Eater", only less fun, more pink snot and blood. But a lot of cool characters, moves and stylish combat.

Story real wolves in the world of a snowy Russian-speaking country(judging by the inscriptions on the signs and more) following your instincts in search of an ephemeral Paradise. This "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" anime universe, which put more humanity into the images of wolves than people have in real life.

The world is falling apart. Wolves live among people, having learned to be like them. The aristocracy controls the base cities and hunts wolves. Like All calmly heading towards the end of the world, But appears Kiba, white polar wolf, disrupting the routine of other "man-wolves" with an obsession with Paradise.

According to legend, exactly wolves will save the world from extinction, opening the gates to what no one knows what Heaven looks like. AND Kiba and company are wandering through the snow and troubles, leaving your past life behind, everyone towards their destiny. Cult anime for real “tramps” with a philosophical mindset and the ability to delve into details, distinguishing levels of semantic load. If the previous sentence didn't bother you, give yourself a gift: watch "Wolf's Rain".

More accurate name: "Now and after, here and there". Perhaps the oldest anime on our list (year 99). AND one of the rarest, many have not heard of him.

Ordinary teenager Shu is very persistent and positive character. He definitely gets his way. Met a mysterious girl Lala-Ru, he's unexpected transported to another world– similar to a radioactive wasteland. Shu is thrown into the horrors of a ferocious war this alternate reality. Torture, hunger, thirst, exploitation of child labor- considered normal. Will Shu break? while trying to save Lala-Ru and her new friends? The ending will not leave you indifferent... Classic. Don't be scared some infantile panache, - the filling of this anime is even more serious than Wolf's Rain and in emotional strength it resembles .

TO And But. So the name of the girl, loner and skilled shooter, going from nowhere to nowhere on Hermes, a talking motorcycle.

A fragmented feudal world consists of assorted corners that are either in the process of collapse or have already experienced it. Fault felt at the level of individual characters, their inner world. Every episode is a parable, wherein Kino performs kind arbiter of morality.

The girl has clear rules of life: not more 3 days in every city, every morning and evening - practice of quickly drawing a pistol from the holster, relationships with people - don't contact. The third principle is the most difficult to observe. In each episode, Kino faces question of morality: how to act according to your conscience, but without critical consequences. In a world that hides its true appearance, The movie character is an example of a solid, strong personality, from whom there is a lot to learn ( zen, including). She survived your personal end of the world. How and why Cinema is always on the go - decide for yourself after viewing.

Apocalyptic kawaii! Three schoolgirls in short plaid skirts in the middle of Tokyo, stratified by wires and plaster. Three. Schoolgirls. In short ones. Checkered. Skirts!

In 2036 year, in 20 years after the crash, which turned central Japan into a radioactive desert, in Tokyo are planting a new generation of GMO people, surviving radiation more easily than hot steam in a sauna. Their task: find survivors(what if) and find out the cause of the disaster. At first it seems that the city is dead, but three schoolgirls gradually are drawn into the movement, incidentally questioning the meaning of one's existence (are they people at all, since science has brought them out). There will be fights. There will be unexpected encounters. But the most the main thing in this anime is the picture. AND speech no longer about plaid skirts, but about the artistic presentation of post-apocalyptic Tokyo. Colors, ruins - these are amazing.

This masterpiece Udot created. No matter how strange it may sound, it's true.

Joint work of Russia and Japan(under the leadership of the first) released a gorgeous, albeit slightly arthouse anime. The world of the future suffers from complete absence vital resources. Humanity has built special complexes, in which it plunged itself into hibernation. One of the complexes, Xonasu, is suddenly hit by a meteor shower, damaging the system. Some people are saved; the complex goes into austerity mode.

– operator Xonasu, awakens 10 years later, feeling that the remaining "frozen" people are dying. Her goal is to save them. But a broken defense system perceives Excella as a danger. The plot is a little confusing(that moment when you can’t figure it out right away without a backstory). Don't watch if you want dialogue and trash. If Are you a fan of cyber fiction, precise direction, stylish animation? and the most important thing!) excellent soundtrack– we desperately recommend it.

It just so happens that anime on the zombie apocalypse and the dead is a relatively rare topic that began to receive attention relatively recently. The legacy of George Rohmer, which is exploited in American (and not only) cinema to this day, has recently reached the animation industry, which rarely spoils us with genres that are closer and more understandable to Western viewers. Considering how often the Japanese refer to native traditional culture Shintoism, traditional zombies become a truly unexpectedly fresh idea (at least for a while). Below is a list of the most prominent representatives.

Zombie anime High School of the Dead

Anime about the zombie apocalypse from the MadHouse studio. A film adaptation of the manga of the same name by Sato Daisuke.

Japan. Our days. The calm, measured life of Fujimi Academy students seemed to be in no danger. Each of them has their own teenage problems: some have difficulties on the love front, others have an imbalance in the family. But one way or another, all this suddenly fades when a bloody and absurd scene unfolds in front of the school gates. In an instant, a zombie apocalypse occurs. The living dead fill all of Japan, and schoolchildren become hostages within the walls of the academy. In this difficult situation, a small handful of survivors will have to not an easy path: Unite as a single team and survive in this crazy world of the living dead.

The anime begins in the best traditions of films about the zombie apocalypse. It can be seen with the naked eye that the author of the original clearly has a weakness for classic movies about the living dead. Lots of references, quite interesting characters, a lot of meat and a lot of fun stuff. Moreover, the fantasy is obsessive, often crossing the line of absurdity. The renowned anime director, Araki Tetsuro (Attack on Titan, Death Note), did an excellent job purely from a visual point of view. But we will never see the continuation of the story of schoolchildren fighting zombies in a world in which the apocalypse has come.

The Empire of Corpses

Full-length anime about zombies. Alternative Europe of the 19th century. A young man named John has a passion for knowledge. human soul(as Victor Frankenstein from Mary Shelley’s novel once nourished). In the world of the apocalypse and steampunk, the main character, along with his other companions, strives to obtain some materials about the possibility of controlling the dead. In a dangerous and at the same time technological world, he has a long way to go to achieve his goals. Anime studio "Project Itoh".

Gakkou Gurashi! (School life!)

Schoolgirls and a zombie apocalypse - this definition is perfectly suited for anime. Yuki is a cheerful and cheerful girl who loves school like no other. Social activity and constant communication are her favorite activities without which she cannot imagine life. Yuki is in a circle with her friends, and also constantly spends the night within the school. But behind all the benevolent surroundings lies a harsh truth - a zombie apocalypse has come to the world. Anime studio "Lerche".

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress

Another anime about a zombie apocalypse from director Araki Tetsuro. The world has been consumed by a virus and now most of the population is uninhabitable, and the remnants of humanity are hiding in protected fortresses. The only means of transport between the remotely located protected towns is the train. A mysterious stranger arrives in the city on one of these trains, after which a chain of events begins that lead to unexpected consequences. Anime studio "Wit".

Absolute hit of the first decades XXI century, a grandiose anime full of cultural references, philosophical implications and other coded messages to humanity. The trump card of this anime in its atmosphere is a dark, foggy world, designed in the style of cyberpunk, where people live in a city under the Dome and are served by auto-rave androids. The dome maintains a comfortable environment for humans; outside it is a scorched desert. In addition, autoraves turned out to be sensitive to the “Cogito” virus, which leads to the appearance of consciousness and even a soul in them. To understand why the world after the apocalypse is the way it is, you need to go through all 23 episodes of this anime series. Luckily, it's worth it.

It seems that the creators of this full-length anime were inspired by the fantastic melodrama “Parallel Worlds” with Kirsten Dunst, released a year earlier. Or maybe the thought of what will happen if the Earth’s gravitational field fails simply visits people anywhere on the planet. The catastrophe greatly changed the laws of gravity, as a result, some people are forced to live underground, otherwise they simply immediately fly into the air, while the other part stands firmly on their feet. If you like a world where everything is the opposite, where falling means flying, and where other people are like reflections in an inverted mirror, then this anime is for you.

Every post-apocalyptic world must have its own anti-hero. Sometimes called the "Demon of the Desert", but most often the "Desert Rat", he is a great connoisseur of the female form, a cynic, a rogue and, oddly enough, a good warrior. This comedy anime with elements of ecchi takes the edge off the usual cinematic feel, where a brave hero on a mission is called upon to mend a broken world. A guy wandering the barren lands owes no one anything, unless, of course, he gets paid for it.

Very often, the end of everything comes through the fault of humanity: either this is retribution for frivolity, or the result of the experiments of some ambitious scientist. This anime is another interpretation of the future after the apocalypse, instead of the sky there is a huge mirror, and all the electronics have long since broken down. And all because someone was trying to find the key to immortality and set off an explosion in Mesapotamia. Immortality did not work out, but many mutants appeared with remarkable superpowers, in fact, X-Men. This anime is not for every taste, but extraordinary enough to be on our list.

A team of wolves that have magically learned to appear human could knowingly say, “Winter is coming!” The world in this anime series has long turned into hell, and without any disasters, on its own. Civilization is fading, the Earth is getting colder, and the presence of paradise is of no use to anyone. the right fairy tale. A clear illustration of the fact that the “end of the world” is a progressive phenomenon. But not for wolves, unlike people, they still believe in a miracle and will look for it to the last. The creators of this anime were inspired not only by the snow-covered landscapes of Russia; in the cartoon, vodka with gobbledygook from the Russian alphabet on the labels and our favorite potatoes appear every now and then.

The popular Japanese series of novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi “D: Vampire Hunter” has only two film adaptations, which is completely atypical for such a cult plot. The world created by Kukuchi is very dangerous; a pop culture researcher will easily find in it features of the Western, Lovecraftian mythology, occultism and science fiction. Thirteenth millennium for this universe turning point. After the nuclear apocalypse in 99, noble and cruel vampires, ancient demons, mutants and man-made monsters ruled here, and now people who for a long time destined for the fate of slaves or food, little by little they begin to destroy higher beings, again capturing the planet...

Director-storyteller Hayao Miyazaki is a famous pacifist and defender of all living things. The world in his second absolutely epic full-length work includes combat aircraft that strongly resemble spiders (remnants of former technological luxury), a huge forest full of poisonous and mutated creatures, and people living as if in an era of feudal fragmentation. Miyazaki manages to tie it all together and reconcile everyone and everything. Our home planet can change overnight, and we, children of nature, are one of its many inhabitants, we should not forget about this.

Japanese animators are convinced that in the end people will have to confront a very dangerous external threat and prove their right to exist on this planet with a sword in their hands. The city where the main characters were born is surrounded by a wall in the manner of the Great Wall of China. This was done for a reason, some titans, huge humanoid creatures that we read about in myths, attacked people and devour them with a greed worthy of the ancient Greek Kronos. It doesn’t sound very believable, but the anime turned out to be a warlike and harsh spectacle with dynamic characters.

The post-apocalyptic setting in anime appeared more than 50 years ago, and over the years about 250 different films, TV series and short films have been released on this topic. Almost every anime season has at least one series about life after a devastating nuclear war, epidemics, natural disasters or alien attacks.

Post-apocalypse in anime is often relegated to the role of a barely noticeable element against which the main plot events unfold. The viewer is not burdened with drama and is told almost nothing about the cruel everyday life of the destroyed world. Of course, there are more traditional things in the genre, but there are much fewer of them. As part of this, let's remember the most important, interesting or undeservedly forgotten anime about the destroyed world of the future.

Mirai Shounen Conan ("Conan - Boy from the Future")

Long before the founding of Studio Ghibli, directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata worked at Nippon Animation. Throughout the 70s, they worked on the script and storyboards for more than 20 series of this studio.

By the end of the decade, Miyazaki already had enough experience that he was offered to direct his debut work - the series Mirai Shounen Conan ("Conan - Boy from the Future") based on the novel "The Incredible Tide" from the American writer Alexander Kay. It was “Conan” that brought Miyazaki fame and opened the way for him to big cinema.

Series screensaver

In 2008, the Third World began on Earth. World War. Instead of nuclear weapons tectonics were used, which is why all the continents went under water. Most of the planet's population died, and the survivors settled on tropical islands that were once mountain ranges. 20 years have passed, and people have finally adapted to life in this wild aquatic world.

The main character is a boy named Conan. His parents were planning to escape from Earth in a spaceship, but on the way to orbit it broke down and fell onto a small island. One part of the crew died immediately, the other died over time from injuries and illnesses. By the beginning of the events of the series, Conan and his grandfather remained living on the island. The sick old man raised the boy and taught him the basics of survival.

Conan fishes daily in the streets of the sunken city

The measured life came to an end when the girl Lana accidentally ended up on the island. Conan found Lana on the shore and took her home, where her grandfather fed her and left her. Before the teenagers had time to really make friends, government agents of the technocratic state of Industry appeared. They mortally wounded grandfather and for some reason kidnapped Lana. The boy buried his grandfather and set off on a journey through the amazing water world of the Earth.

Conan is an early prototype for Miyazaki's famous film Castle in the Sky. There are so many coincidences that it would be a stretch to call “Laputa” a remake of the director’s first work.

On site: plot device"the girl in distress", the brave boy, strong friendship, the fight against a ruthless technocracy and the prototype of the main villain. Themes of anti-militarism and the fight for the environment first appeared in Miyazaki’s work in this series.

The main audience of this anime is children from 10 to 16 years old. In reality, everything is different. Indeed, at times the series is naive and childishly spontaneous. But it has several controversial scenes that make it difficult to classify as a children's anime. For example, in one of the early episodes, the sailors beat the main characters almost to death. The series often raises philosophical questions about life and man’s place in nature. It is unlikely that they will interest a very young viewer.

If you love Miyazaki, but for some reason have not heard of this series, then it is still worth watching. Longtime fans will see all the hallmarks of future Studio Ghibli films in Conan. From character design and types, to animation and familiar narrative.

Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa ("Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind")

In addition to directing feature films, Miyazaki drew manga. Years later, he was very critical of his career as a comics artist and more than once called himself a "failed mangaka." However, until the mid-90s, Miyazaki published his short stories in Animage magazine. Even after retiring, the director did not give up his hobby and continued to draw manga in his spare time. He's still working on a samurai comic.

Criticality to own creativity is connected with the manga “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind,” which Miyazaki drew for more than 12 years, “burned out” several times, took long breaks, and at one time even thought of quitting it in the middle of publication. However, in 1984, a full-length anime was released based on the still unfinished Nausicaä.

This trailer was shown in Japanese cinemas before the premiere

A thousand years ago the old world was destroyed. People have been littering the Earth for centuries, experimenting with nature and genetic engineering. Humanity soon paid for its deeds when biomechanical weapons, giant titans, rebelled against their creators. The fateful “Seven Days of Fire” came, after which the planet changed forever. Over time, the titans either died or fell into centuries-long hibernation.

Giants

The destruction of the world was shown in more detail in the short film “Giant Divine Warrior in Tokyo” from Studio Khara

Several centuries later, the flora and fauna of the Earth mutated beyond recognition. The soil is contaminated, most of the oceans have turned into deadly acid. On the scorched surface of the planet grows a poisonous forest in which huge insects live.

The forest grows and displaces rare human settlements, people die from poisonous spores and insect attacks. No one wants to unite in the fight against an obvious threat. Even on the verge of extinction, humanity is still fighting for patches of surviving land, valuable resources and artifacts from the past.

Poisoned Forest

Only in the Valley of the Winds do people live in harmony with nature. They try not to touch the forest and its inhabitants, and they fence themselves off from dangers with large mountains. The wind protects the village from poisonous spores, its inhabitants have clean water and a regular harvest. The good princess of the Valley of the Wind, Nausicaa, explores the infected forest and wants to understand the nature of the mysterious phenomenon.

It was thanks to the enormous success of “Nausicaä” that the Ghibli animation studio was created, and Miyazaki was talked about outside of Japan. People's love for the film did not subside until the early 90s. For example, Nausicaa has been ranked first among the most popular and significant heroines in anime history for more than ten years, according to readers of the Japanese magazine Animage.

“Nausicaä” was released with the support of the World Wildlife Fund. The film touched on eternal and painful topics like pollution environment, extinction of animals or ongoing wars. Today, the film is part of Studio Ghibli’s famous “ecological trilogy,” which in addition to “Nausicaä” includes “Princess Mononoke” and “Pompoko: War of the Tanuki.”

The director himself was dissatisfied with his creation. Miyazaki hated the banal happy ending and considered the second half of the film too crumpled and predictable. Despite the author's criticism, the film adaptation of Nausicaä is a self-sufficient and cult story. If you want something deeper and more, then in addition you can read the original manga.

Hokuto no Ken ("Fist of the North Star")

The Fist of the North Star franchise was created by mangaka Tetsuo Hara and screenwriter Yoshiyuki Okamura. The work was born from a crazy but bold idea - to create the first post-apocalyptic story about martial arts. The authors came up with an amazing hybrid: a Hong Kong action movie like the films with Bruce Lee, but in a universe in the spirit of Mad Max. The main character's clothes were taken from Max, his appearance was copied from Lee, to whom the manga creators added the features of muscular actors from Hollywood action films of the early 80s.

Today, the Fist franchise has several TV series and spin-offs, a prequel, a feature film, numerous video games and a failed Hollywood film adaptation. The title has several main characters, but above all, it is the story of Kenshiro.

Epic screensaver And even more epic screensaver to the song of the Japanese rock band TOM★CAT

The events of the first film adaptation and manga take place in the alternative 90s. The world is in ruins after a devastating nuclear war. People wander in search of water, food and safe housing. Lawlessness reigns all around, gangs of raiders and maniacs are rampant on the roads. Large settlements are ruled by self-proclaimed emperors and generals.

The man Kenshiro, who masters the deadly martial art “Hokuto-shin-ken,” became the messiah and savior of the oppressed people overnight. It is similar to Jeet Kune Do, but almost all the blows are aimed at pressure points in the body. If you put all your strength into it and hit a certain point, then a person can be destroyed in a matter of seconds. For example, create powerful pressure in the head, due to which the skull will burst and all its contents will fly out.

Hokuto-shin-ken in action

“Fist of the North Star” is one of the first representatives of the so-called “GAR” anime. Firearms are not held in high esteem here; almost all characters fight exclusively hand-to-hand. In any GAR title, the heroes are rugged, muscular, and partially naked. The central place in the narrative is occupied by battles or preparations for battle with the next bandit leader.

The franchise uses a simple and familiar formula for the shonen genre: the main character travels from city to city, defeating enemies and making new friends along his travels. There are also obvious clichés like lost relatives, resurrected enemies and estranged lovers. Old villains turn into friends, friends turn into sworn enemies.

The most ordinary landscape in the world of "Fist"

All this is repeated in a circle until the last episode. Templates and naive plot twists“Fist” is unlikely to upset a new viewer. Quite the contrary - today this anime makes me laugh a lot. With its pretentious and absurd situations, “Fist” is reminiscent of the franchise (“JoJo’s Amazing Adventures”), which, by the way, was inspired by the creation of Tetsuo Hara.

ATATATATATATATATA

“Fist” differs from other series in the shonen genre in the abundance of cruelty and dismemberment. The characters burst like balloons after the next “health” session of Hokuto Shin-ken. In the first series this is shown with gentle censorship, but in the sequels they are no longer shy about showing internal organs, severed limbs and brains turned inside out.

The 1986 film shocked the unprepared public at the time. Violent scenes were censored in several countries

In recent years, the franchise has found new fans thanks to Kenshiro's catchphrase - Omae wa mou shindeiru (from Japanese: “You are already dead”). The excerpt with the murder of the bandit leader and his surprised exclamation Nani (from Japanese “What?”) quickly turned into a popular Internet meme and gave rise to entire collections funny videos on YouTube.

Violence Jack

In the future, humanity is faced with overpopulation and social stratification. Resources have been depleted, the Earth has erupted nuclear war, which later spread to the Moon. The planet lies in ruins, and people lead a nomadic lifestyle and explore abandoned cities in search of useful artifacts. They are called "scavengers" or "stalkers". Moving on the surface is difficult due to combat robots - after the war they did not turn off, they still function and destroy any living creature.

Film adaptation trailer

Fleeing robots, former military man and scavenger Kuzuya hides in an abandoned shopping mall. In it, they meet a cute gynoid named Yumemi. She maintains the local planetarium and is always happy to see a new visitor. True, there have been no visitors for 30 years. In honor of Kuzuya's arrival, Yumemi wants to organize an educational show.

"Planetarian" is Touching story relationship between the scavenger and the genoid, which gives you goosebumps. Although the anime based on the visual novel omits some aspects of the game, it still retells the plot of the original in detail. Before watching, it is advisable to turn off the cynic in yourself and stock up on handkerchiefs. Well, for total immersion- be sure to read the visual novel.

Casshern Sins ("Sins of Cassian")

In the mid-70s, the animated series Shinzou Ningen Casshern (New Man Cassian) was released in Japan. Its action took place not in a post-apocalyptic future, but on Earth during the uprising of the machines. The robots were organized by the android Braiking Boss (model BK-1), who went against his creator, Professor Azuma.

To save humanity, the professor turns his son Tetsuya into the neo-droid Kassian - a hybrid of an android and an ordinary person. Tetsuya gained incredible strength, speed and endurance. Only he is able to defeat Braiking Boss and his army.

Today the original Casshern looks naive and stupid in places. Each episode is a story about a “monster of the week”, and the plot is marking time. Although, long before the release of The Terminator, The Matrix and RoboCop, he anticipated the plot of the rise of the machines and spoke about the main problems of cybernation. The neo-droid's appearance influenced the design of Raiden from Metal Gear Rising, and the series' concept was inspired by Shinji Mikami during the development of Vanquish.

In 2009, a large-scale remake was released called Casshern Sins (“Sins of Cassian”). The core of the plot remains unchanged - Kassian is still fighting the Braking Boss and his minions. However, the creators turned the whole concept upside down: they decided to move the action of the anime to the post-apocalyptic future of the Earth. In it, humanity has long been extinct, and the dying Earth is ruled by an army of robots.

After the disaster, the planet's air was polluted to such a state that, under its influence, robots quickly rusted and gradually fell apart. All life on the planet died long ago, and the landscape turned into a lifeless gray wasteland. The crippled robots are hunting for Kassian and believe that if they eat his body, they can stop the corrosion and gain immortality.

In part, Casshern Sins is reminiscent of the anime Ergo Proxy - so the series is difficult to watch in one gulp due to the viscous melancholic atmosphere. Decline, death and the search for one's own destiny are the main themes of the remake. From classic teen action anime, the Casshern franchise has transformed into an existential parable.

Casshern Sins is a meditative, contemplative and thoughtful work. And that’s why the remake wasn’t for everyone. It will be hard for someone to look at gray landscapes for nine hours and listen to depressive speeches from the lips of characters.

Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou ("Girls' Last Journey")

After a protracted war, there were almost no people and animals left on the planet. Two girls, Tito and Yuri, travel on a half-track motorcycle through the ruins of a majestic city. They explore the cold, dead world, looking for provisions and useful things.

In anime, everything is based on minimalism. Most of the time the viewer listens to funny dialogues and views the panoramas of the abandoned city. Lovely heroines have a positive outlook on their lives, the world and the future. As if nothing had happened, they have fun, are sincerely surprised by the simplest things and don’t really think about the meaning of life. Their the main objective is about survival and travel. Everything else is secondary.

But with its minimalism and strange ease, the series often frightens. The entire plot of the girls explores a giant multi-level city. The most amazing thing is that after the war there were no corpses or cemeteries with remains in this world. Military equipment is abandoned, city buildings are monolithic and empty. It seems that before the war people took away everything valuable, or at the dawn of their death they fell into asceticism. They lived in empty rooms with only four walls, a table and a bed. What's wrong with this world?

Why build houses like this?

An attentive viewer will have a question: is this Earth at all? The girls ride a German Kettenkrad motorcycle from World War II and shoot with a Japanese Arisaka rifle. At the same time, in the world they meet smart robots, advanced digital cameras, weapons from the Cold War, as well as tanks and aircraft from different eras. An incomprehensible heap is small, where the viewer must assemble the puzzle himself. This raises the question: is there anything to collect, and is it so important?

The anime is permeated by total hopelessness. In their travels, the heroines will meet two travelers, but their further fate is unknown. The ending of the series leaves room for imagination, but from the first episode the fate of the heroines is actually predetermined. Gasoline will run out sooner or later, the girls will settle somewhere, grow old and die. What will remain is a collapsed world covered in snow and a rusting motorcycle.

A symbiosis of two genres

Post-apocalyptic fiction often intersects with other science fiction genres. In the article about we already talked about TV series and films in a post-apocalyptic setting. Let us briefly recall the main events of these works.

Cult movie Akira from Katsuhiro Otomo can only be partially attributed to post-apocalypse - here it is rather local in nature. According to the plot of the film, the city of Tokyo was destroyed by a nuclear explosion during an unsuccessful experiment on people. The main events of the anime and manga take place in the future, in the city of Neo-Tokyo. At the end of the manga and its film adaptation new town will also be destroyed. Latest volumes manga take place in the isolated ruins of Neo-Tokyo, where anarchy reigns and factions are at war.

Akira

In the manga adaptation Gunnm ("Dreams of Guns") a fairly classic setting for both cyberpunk and post-apocalypse. In the Gunnm universe, a destructive war has died down long ago. The landscape of the planet has changed beyond recognition - the Earth has turned into a lifeless desert.

Society was divided into two types of people - inhabitants of the sky and inhabitants of the lower world. The former live happily in the inaccessible floating city of Salem, while the inhabitants of the Dump huddle in a giant self-built garbage dump. Life below is entirely dependent on waste from elite Salem. Downworlders cannot enter Salem due to the city's security systems. The penalty for trying to sneak in is death.

Gunnm

In the series Texhnolyze (“Technolyze”)- an infinitely gloomy view of the future. Deep underground, life is in full swing in the ghetto city of Lux, where criminals and people potentially dangerous to society were once exiled from the surface. Lux's world is full of abandoned factories, ugly houses, gloomy faces and sick people.

Sometimes natural disasters, diseases and wars are not needed for a post-apocalypse. Lux's world is ugly and looks like a branch of hell, but it is alive. On the surface, people have long turned into an amorphous mass: in the anime they are depicted as faceless shadows who humbly spend their last days waiting for the decline of humanity.

Post-apocalypse in an idyll - this is what the upper world looks like in Texhnolyze

Based on the plot of manga and anime Appleseed, in 2127 the Fifth World War ended. Veterans Dunant and Briareus find themselves in the city of Olympus, which is considered the safest place on the destroyed Earth. The city's population consists almost entirely of bioroids - intelligent androids indistinguishable from humans. And the city is controlled by the computer Geya and the council of wise elders.

Appleseed is pure cyberpunk. But it is important to note that the plot of some film adaptations and manga takes place outside of Olympus. Dunant and Briarey will carry out missions in destroyed cities and fight various terrorist groups.

Ripple from the manga Appleseed

IN Ergo Proxy post-apocalyptic even more than cyberpunk. In the future, the Earth's atmosphere has become completely polluted, and people have moved into large domes with autonomous life support. Some part of humanity flew into orbit to wait until the Earth itself cleansed itself. It is impossible to live outside the dome - the air will slowly kill a person in less than an hour.

Romdo is considered the largest city on Earth. It is ruled with an iron fist by advisers, and half of the population consists of autorave androids. The population is controlled: in order to have a family and a child, you need to obtain the appropriate permission.

Ergo Proxy is divided into two distinct halves: a detective investigation in the city of Romdo and a psychological road movie. In the second half of the series, the heroes travel through a lifeless wasteland and visit several autonomous domes.

Ruins of the Mosk dome. Built around Moscow and destroyed by thermonuclear explosion

The Animatrix- this is an American-Japanese collection short films based on the Matrix trilogy. The collection expands the universe of the franchise, supplements it with details, closes some plot holes and introduces new heroes.

Of all the films, the “Second Renaissance” duology is closest to the theme of post-apocalypse. These short films are narrated from the perspective of the virtual library of Zion and presented in the style of a documentary chronicle. The viewer will be shown all the important events preceding the war with the machines: from the creation of the first robots to the appearance of the Matrix.

The Animatrix

Pale Cocoon- a mixture of cyberpunk and post-apocalyptic. In this short film, humanity has once again destroyed the Earth. To live a few more thousand years, people went into the bowels of the planet.

After 200 years, there was not a single person left who could see the sky, the Sun, animals or plants. People go to routine work, seeing only dim lights, faceless rooms, webs of wires and computers. The main character of Pale Cocoon sits in the research department every day and deciphers records from the past. He believes that one day he will find something important, although his colleagues have long given up hope.

Pale Cocoon

Tsutomu Nihei is a wonderful mangaka and visionary. His work is difficult to define as one genre; it is often a complex mixture. Here it is definitely worth mentioning his famous Blame!. But it's important to note: it's best to read Blame first.

The first film adaptations were video clips with excerpts from the manga, and the feature-length film adapted and greatly modified one story arc. There is no ideal film adaptation yet, and it is unlikely that its release will be expected in the foreseeable future.

Blame

Place and year of action in Blame! unknown. In the first edition of the manga, the author himself could not decide, putting in the epigraph: “Maybe in the future, maybe on Earth.”

Events take place in a huge techno-labyrinth called the Megastructure. The number of floors and the length of the Megastructure are unknown, but each individual level is home to its own varieties of cyborgs, mutated people and other creatures. In a prequel called Noise, Nihei revealed that the Megastructure was built on Earth, reached the Moon and continues to grow further.

Blame

The main character is the mysterious guy Killy. He travels through the world of Megastructure in search of a certain Network Gene, DNA without mutations, with which he can control the labyrinth. In the future, there are no people left with pure DNA, but according to legend, it must remain somewhere. Killy's journey consists of constant clashes with hostile creatures of this world. The hero rises higher and higher, leaving behind destruction and mountains of dead cyborgs.

Worth mentioning

Let us recall 18 more works that, for various reasons, did not make it into the main list. In them, the post-apocalyptic setting was either relegated to the background, or the work itself was too controversial.

In the middle of the series Macross(known in Russia as part of the Robotek compilation) the victory over the alien race Zentradi came at a great price. During a massive alien attack, 90 percent of the Earth's population was destroyed, and the planet itself turned into a wasteland. The last ten episodes of the series are dedicated to the restoration of life on Earth.

Still from the movie Macross: Do You Remember Love?

Sousei Kishi Gaiarth ("Gaiarth: Origin of the Survivors") immerses the viewer in a post-apocalyptic pseudo-fantasy world. Androids or synthetics are called "elves", robots are called "monsters", and ancient technologies and tricks with electricity are called "magic".

After the war, two types of robots remained in the wasteland - automated robots and anthropomorphic intelligent machines. Both species helped people during the war, and while the latter still protect humanity, the former have rebelled and continue to kill. To combat them, special teams of scavengers have been organized to fight evil machines and look for ancient technologies. One of these scavengers is the brave warrior Ital. WITH early childhood and until his youth he was raised by a combat robot.

Sousei Kishi Gaiarth

In the series Ao no Roku-go ("Blue Submarine No. 6") continents went under water after the melting of glaciers. The mad scientist Zorndyke is to blame for the natural disaster, who not only destroyed the old world, but also decided to breed an evil race of mutants. Zorndyke's armies are opposed by the United Nations fleet, including high-tech submarines. The main characters are the crew of submarine number six.

Interesting idea, but completely ruined potential. The viewing pleasure is spoiled by the superficial and naive plot, the formulaic motivation of the villain and mediocre character development. Ao no Roku-go is the first anime to be shot almost entirely using computer animation. But alas, special effects are getting old every year. What was considered cutting-edge technology in 1998 is now on par with PlayStation videos and the movie “Kids vs. Wizards.” It will be difficult, if not impossible, for a new viewer to watch.

Ao no Roku-go

Cult series Trigun And Cowboy Bebop for some reason it is classified as a post-apocalyptic anime, but the element of post-apocalypse here is secondary and barely noticeable. In Cowboy Bebop, Earth is abandoned after a failed experiment caused the moon to explode and large chunks of it to destroy cities.

Cowboy Bebop

IN Trigun The action takes place on the remote desert planet Gunsmoke. Many years ago, ships of colonial settlers from Earth fell on it. The survivors built the first cities from their debris and gradually populated most of the planet.

Trigun

Series Kurogane Communication (“Iron Communication”) again raises the topic of the relationship between people and robots. Haruka is the last surviving person on Earth. In a world destroyed after the war, she is found in a cryocapsule by five robots. It seems that after the war, only cars remained on the planet. Some are very hostile and programmed to kill, others are friendly and serve humans. Five robots decided to raise and protect Haruka at any cost.

Unfortunately, the series becomes tiresome by the third episode. For more than half of the screen time, the robots save a stupid girl who constantly gets into trouble. The rest of the time, the characters delve into their inner “cockroaches” and play the fool all day long. They tried to humanize the robots, but it didn’t go beyond the personal drama and a short backstory of each character.

Kurogane Communication

In a popular franchise Vampire Hunter D events take place 10 thousand years after the Third World War. The viewer is immersed in a gothic post-apocalyptic world with elements of dark fantasy.

After the war, power on Earth was seized by vampires, who had been hiding from people for centuries and were creatures from ancient legends. Vampires enslaved people and began to gradually restore the ecology and the destroyed world with the help of magic and advanced technology.

Vampire Hunter D

After millennia, the despotism of vampires has come to an end. People rebelled against their masters, conquered and destroyed the cybernetic cities of bloodsucking aristocrats - humanity regained freedom. Now exiled vampires hide in the mountains and ancient castles. From time to time they attack people, but their race is on the verge of extinction.

Ancient spaceship

Traces of the Third World War and the fading vampire civilization are visible even after millennia. In the deserts you can still see the remains of ancient cities and broken spaceships. Mutants and resurrected monsters from ancient fairy tales have not disappeared anywhere. Vampires have been experimenting with genes for centuries and were able to bring back dragons, werewolves, zombies and other mythical evil spirits. Now they are being exterminated by free mercenaries, among whom there is a mysterious dhampir (half-breed) nicknamed Di.

An abandoned highway built during the reign of vampires

In the series Made in Abyss post-apocalypse supposedly happens once every few thousand years. This is indicated by the Abyss - a deep hole on an isolated island in the middle of the ocean. The Abyss is clearly divided into levels, and each of them has its own unique artifacts. At one level, people have found artifacts of a more advanced civilization and there are ancient buildings that look like skyscrapers.

According to one theory, the layers of the Abyss reflect the development of the planet in different time periods. According to another, the Abyss pulls the world into itself from the surface of the planet every few thousand years.

Movie Giniro no Kami no Agito ("Silver-haired Agito") can be described briefly - beautiful. The background artists created perhaps the best post-apocalyptic backgrounds in the history of Japanese animation. The apocalypse in this film occurred after unsuccessful experiments on plants. This caused the Moon to split apart and pieces of it to fall onto the planet, after which it was completely overgrown with a dense and intelligent forest.

Overall, there's nothing more to praise here. There is a picture, but they forgot about the plot. The characters constantly do stupid things and lack normal motivation and logic. There is a brave boy, there is a girl in trouble, unmemorable residents and a cardboard unwritten villain - that's the whole characterization of the characters. And the plot itself, along with key ideas, was borrowed from Miyazaki’s “Nausicaä” and distorted beyond recognition.

Giniro no Kami no Agito

Another question: what else can you expect from the notorious Gonzo studio? Three years later, a post-apocalyptic series was released Shangri-La, which also “pleased” with a deranged plot and cardboard heroes. One joy is beautiful backdrops. Whether it is worth spending time watching for them - everyone will decide for themselves.

Shangri-La

The series deserves the title of the most crazy post-apocalyptic anime Coppelion. In early 2016, a bomb exploded in Tokyo nuclear power plant. The Chernobyl scenario repeated itself, many people died, and the capital turned into an abandoned exclusion zone. However, unlike Chernobyl, being in Tokyo is deadly even two decades after the disaster.

Coppelion

But radiation has no effect on a squad of brave Japanese schoolgirls. They are graduates of a secret government academy and, thanks to genetic engineering, have complete immunity to radiation. They were sent to the exclusion zone to conduct reconnaissance and search for the causes of the disaster.

Stupid girls in school uniform(with short skirts) walk around a ghost town without any preparation, equipment or a hint of self-preservation instinct. The heroines whine about everything and do such stupid and illogical things that they make the infamous team from Alien: Covenant look like geniuses. All this theater of the absurd with a serious face is not pulled off by the pretty graphics and panoramas of abandoned Tokyo. Better to avoid.

Coppelion

Things are much better with Suisei no Gargantia ("Gargantia on the Green Planet") from the studio Production I.G. The famous screenwriter Gen Uroboti (Fate/Zero, Psycho Pass, Saya no Uta) worked on its plot. The problem is that Uroboti came up with the setting and wrote the script for the first and last episodes. Different screenwriters worked on the rest, which is why selected episodes seem empty and superfluous.

And it’s strange when in a 13-episode anime only four episodes develop the plot and the universe, and all the others are needed just like that. Otherwise, this is another variation of the flooded world, but in the spirit of the Hollywood blockbuster “Water World”. People live on giant floating islands, explore sunken cities and raise lost ships. If the post-apocalypse had not been relegated to a superficial role in the plot, the series would have had a chance to make it onto the main list.

Suisei no Gargantia

In the famous Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann ("Sky Piercing Gurren Lagann") An alien race of “anti-spirals” destroyed the surface of the Earth and drove people into the depths of the planet. For thousands of years, humanity lived under the earth's crust. Those who dared to rise to the surface were exterminated by an intelligent race of beast people. By the beginning of the events of the series, there were less than 500 thousand people left on Earth.

Surface of the Earth in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

There are works that completely deviate from the established canons of the genre. At first glance, it’s hard to even call them post-apocalyptic. For example, in dystopia Shinsekai no Yori ("From the New World") humanity has evolved and in the future abandoned advanced technologies in favor of telekinesis. Electricity is banned, there is no centralized government, and people live in isolated settlements.

Shinsekai no Yori

In an absurd, but at the same time cute series Jinrui wa Shimashita ("Humanity has fallen into decline") people have lost interest in life and are gradually dying out due to low birth rates. At the same time, a race of small and cute fairies appeared who could perform various miracles. The nameless heroine, the main intermediary between people and fairies, comes into contact with them.

Jinrui wa Shimashita

In anime Kemono Friends (“Animal Friends”) humanity supposedly died out, but left behind anthropomorphic intelligent animals. They are outwardly indistinguishable from people, only they have a tail, ears and habits from various animals.

main character nicknamed Handbag - the last person on the planet. She travels through the Japari Conservation Park with a serval girl, meets good-natured animals and tries to remember her past.

A very life-like perception of the series “before” and “after” viewing

Fantasy on a theme from Japanese artist with the nickname Whitebear

The theme of the zombie apocalypse is not addressed very often in anime. IN Koutetsujou no Kabaneri ("Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress") takes place in a steampunk world reminiscent of feudal Japan. People live in fortresses, travel on giant steam locomotives and fight hordes of zombies. The series is often criticized for its derivativeness and plagiarism of the famous “Attack on Titan”.

Koutetsujou no Kabaneri

Highschool of Dead It perfectly shows all the stages of the beginning of the epidemic, but quickly becomes boring due to the overwhelming amount of fan service and dubious humor. What kind of serious plot and post-apocalypse is there, when the heroines show off their underwear and breasts every few minutes? In addition to this, the original manga was discontinued due to the death of its author in 2017. We will never know the true ending.

The whole point of Highschool of Dead

Finally, in Gakkou Gurashi! ("School life!") The zombie apocalypse is shown from the perspective of cute schoolgirls. The result is a strange hybrid of horror and horror, in which cute heroines fight for life in a barricaded school.

Gakkou Gurashi!

Megapopular Shingeki no Kyojin ("Attack of the Titans) was not included in the main list. Just four years ago, with some reservations, it could be classified in this genre. But several important events in the manga turned the entire world order of the franchise upside down. It is pointless to talk about some kind of “post-apocalypse” after this.

In the world of Naruto, two years flew by unnoticed. Former newcomers joined the ranks of experienced shinobi at the rank of chunin and jonin. The main characters did not sit still - each became a student of one of the legendary Sannin - the three great ninjas of Konoha. The guy in orange continued his training with the wise but eccentric Jiraiya, gradually ascending to new level combat skill. Sakura became the assistant and confidant of the healer Tsunade, the new leader of the Leaf Village. Well, Sasuke, whose pride led to his expulsion from Konoha, entered into a temporary alliance with the sinister Orochimaru, and each believes that they are only using the other for the time being.

The brief respite ended, and events once again rushed with hurricane speed. In Konoha, the seeds of old strife sown by the first Hokage are sprouting again. The mysterious Akatsuki leader has set in motion a plan for world domination. There is turmoil in the Sand Village and neighboring countries, old secrets are resurfacing everywhere, and it is clear that someday the bills will have to be paid. The long-awaited continuation of the manga inspired new life into the series and new hope into the hearts of countless fans!

Yato is a wandering Japanese god in the form of a thin, blue-eyed youth in a tracksuit. In Shintoism, the power of a deity is determined by the number of believers, but our hero has no temple, no priests, all donations fit into a sake bottle. The guy in the neckerchief works as a handyman, painting advertisements on the walls, but things are going very badly. Even the tongue-in-cheek Mayu, who worked as a shinki—Yato’s Sacred Weapon—for many years, left her master. And without weapons, the younger god is no stronger than an ordinary mortal magician; he has to (what a shame!) hide from evil spirits. And who needs such a celestial being anyway?

One day, a pretty high school girl, Hiyori Iki, threw herself under a truck to save some guy in black. It ended badly - the girl did not die, but gained the ability to “leave” her body and walk on the “other side.” Having met Yato there and recognizing the culprit of her troubles, Hiyori convinced the homeless god to heal her, for he himself admitted that no one can live long between worlds. But, having gotten to know each other better, Iki realized that the current Yato did not have enough strength to solve her problem. Well, you need to take matters into your own hands and personally guide the tramp on the right path: first, find a weapon for the unlucky one, then help him earn money, and then, you see, what happens. It’s not for nothing that they say: what a woman wants, God wants!

IN high school Suimei University of Arts has many dormitories, and there are apartment building"Sakura". If the dormitories operate strict rules, then in “Sakura” everything is possible, it’s not for nothing that its local nickname is “madhouse”. Since in art genius and madness are always somewhere nearby, the inhabitants of the “cherry orchard” are talented and interesting guys who are too far out of the “swamp”. Take, for example, the noisy Misaki, who sells her own anime to major studios, her friend and playboy screenwriter Jin, or the reclusive programmer Ryunosuke, who communicates with the world only via the Internet and telephone. Compared to them, the main character Sorata Kanda is a simpleton who ended up in a “psychiatric hospital” just for... loving cats!

Therefore, Chihiro-sensei, the head of the dormitory, instructed Sorata, as the only sane guest, to meet her cousin Mashiro, who was transferring to their school from distant Britain. The fragile blonde seemed like a real bright angel to Kanda. True, at a party with new neighbors, the guest behaved stiffly and said little, but the newly minted admirer attributed everything to understandable stress and fatigue from the road. Only real stress awaited Sorata in the morning when he went to wake up Mashiro. The hero realized with horror that his new friend, a great artist, was absolutely out of this world, that is, she was not even able to dress herself! And the insidious Chihiro is right there - from now on, Kanda will forever look after her sister, because the guy has already practiced on cats!

The ghoul race has existed since time immemorial. Its representatives are not at all against people, they even love them - mainly in their raw form. Lovers of human flesh are outwardly indistinguishable from us, strong, fast and tenacious - but there are few of them, so ghouls have developed strict rules for hunting and camouflage, and violators are punished themselves or quietly handed over to fighters against evil spirits. In the age of science, people know about ghouls, but as they say, they are used to it. The authorities do not consider cannibals a threat; moreover, they view them as an ideal basis for creating super-soldiers. Experiments have been going on for a long time...

The main character Ken Kaneki faces a painful search for a new path, because he realized that people and ghouls are similar: it’s just that some literally eat each other, others figuratively. The truth of life is cruel, it cannot be changed, and the one who does not turn away is strong. And then somehow!
