Abstinence in reversed position with the Minor Arcana

King of Cups (trans) - Dependence of monetary property

Moderation in the tarot means the union of opposites. You must achieve balance in order to find harmony. Be patient, seek the truth and discover new awareness.

Description

The Temperance card depicts a winged angel holding two cups of water. Water is poured from one bowl to another, meaning uniformity, severity and moderation, as a way of spiritual advancement. The halo above the angel's head shows the character's enlightened status.

On the angel's chest there is a triangle enclosed in a square. The upward facing triangle is the alchemical symbol of Fire, representing the passions, emotions and fiery aspects of human nature. The square enclosed in the triangle represents laws that mitigate the effects of human passion.

The holiness of the angel is further emphasized by the rising sun in the background. In many decks, the sun is depicted as a luminous crown, referring to the Sun King - be it Ra, Apollo, Jesus, or the many solar deities worshiped throughout history. The sun is also visible on the angel's forehead with a circle around the dot.

An angel has one foot on land and the other in water. This position symbolizes the balance between the material world - represented by earth, and the spiritual realm - represented by water. The Temperance card, a symbol of balance, insists that we not become too attached to all things worldly, but also not allow ourselves to be completely consumed by the spiritual realms.

The theme of balance is also reflected in the angel's pose: the angel is depicted as a hermaphrodite, the child of Hermes and Aphrodite. The androgynous quality of the angel emphasizes the balance of the masculine in the feminine energies both in society and in individuals. A person must balance his feminine and masculine qualities evenly in order to be fully self-realized and spiritually enlightened.

When the Temperance card appears in a reading, it indicates that patience is the best course of action. Continue doing what you are doing without trying to change the situation. Don't expect immediate results and know that the results you are looking for will take some time. The card reassures us that our patience will be rewarded and that the best possible outcome is on its way to us as long as we are patient.

This Arcanum promotes inaction or cautious moderate action on impulsive behavior. The angel with one foot in the water to test the temperature is how Temperance asks us to act: carefully, testing our limits, not to act headlong, but consciously and rationally. This attitude contrasts with fools who call for combat, moving blindly and impatiently.

This card also represents moderation, especially in terms of material indulgence. Although the Tarot does not necessarily preach asceticism, moderation is valued as a necessary factor for self-realization. Drinking too much, eating too much, having too much sex, too much physical pleasure in general will ultimately prevent us from developing spiritually and gaining personal power.

When Temperance appears, you should consider how you can curb some of your vices or unhealthy habits. Maybe you smoke too much, don't move enough, use foul language often, or don't eat right? Surprisingly, when this card appears, a person immediately understands what sins and vices it exposes, so one should take note and think about it.

The Arcanum reflects your efforts to bring balance, patience and self-control into your life. So far, you have been able to navigate the main path between extremes and remain calm when making difficult decisions. This means that you have learned to act calmly, without emotions or nerves, in situations of high stress or anxiety. Don't let problems affect you, try to find inner peace in the midst of all the chaos in the world. This means having a balanced temperament that demonstrates emotional development.

You have learned not to allow yourself to get caught up in other people's conflicts or to allow minor issues to throw you off balance. Instead, you adapt to situations with a clear mind and a calm heart, and maintain balance. Moderation can also mean that you have found peace and tranquility and you feel content. The Arcanum indicates that you are truly in touch with your inner self, your values and morals make it easier to understand what you want from life and help you set worthy goals.

The Moderation card reflects a clear long-term vision of what you want to achieve: you spend your time learning, and intend to apply knowledge in life, making sure in advance that your goals are fully realized.

In many cases, this Arcana indicates the need to act in a harmonious, balanced, moderate way. Don't get carried away by rational thoughts or act on emotions. Know how to find a balance between the two poles.

The Temperance card in an inverted position (reverse), as happens with most Arcana, changes its meaning. She declares that a person lacks balance and character in life. It is necessary to act moderately in any decisions and actions, it is necessary to restore the balance that has been lost.

Something is out of balance and out of control in your life. This could be conflict at work or with family members, offensive behavior, rowdy behavior, spending a lot of time on fruitless hobbies and excessive attention to detail.

The card also warns you about continuing on a path that will lead to negative results. Seek balance and advice before making any risky decisions that could jeopardize your future. Keep a clear mind and calm, and everything will follow and happen as it turns out.

In reverse order, the card indicates passivity, excess and imbalance, excessive indulgence, and may indicate passivity in the name of patience. You must take action and not sit on the sidelines waiting for circumstances to change.

The lasso can be an indicator that you are behaving hastily or recklessly. This can be a sign of many problems with excessive or bad habits, such as drinking alcohol, drugs, gambling, overeating, shopping. You have lost your inner peace, and are seeking satisfaction in risky, harmful ways. There is a lack of harmony with the people in your life, which is why frequent conflict situations arise.

Combinations

  • Hierophant - you need to go to the hospital.
  • Star - you have a lot of inner harmony. Angels are around you.
  • Sun - moderate intense situation.
  • World - art museum exhibits.
  • 10 of Wands - there is no balance that you are looking for.
  • 10 of Cups - the union of opposites in peace and harmony.
  • Three of Swords - healing after surgery
  • Eight of Swords - may indicate some kind of addiction.
  • Five of Cups - new love after a breakup.

Direct position

In the context of love, if you are in a relationship, this card signifies a harmonious union, when you and your partner have found the perfect balance of love, commitment and respect, you feel like soulmates. There is no stormy passion, outburst of emotions and wild desires between people; there is calm, understanding and restraint in everything.

This may make some people sad, but for those who are tired of a hectic life, such relationships will seem like manna from heaven. Partners understand each other without words, live with the same breath, always make compromises, respect the other’s opinion, and are afraid of upsetting each other. We are not talking about reckless love here, there are deeper feelings, a person’s ability to accept a partner for who he is. Unity and integrity are something that is kept between people and not put on display.

This Arcanum is a symbol of compatibility. People's sexual life is characterized by harmony, gentleness, and restraint. Intimacy is more like an exchange of energies than carnal desire.

If you have had problems in your relationship, you will overcome them and move forward together. In this case, it is important to realize the problems, the root of which is antagonism - confrontation with someone or something that interferes with the development of relationships. A person is already predisposed against a partner and a relationship, the outcome of which is unknown to him.

Such an experience is very difficult to overcome, and as a rule, a person must cope with demons that confuse his consciousness and mislead him. The Temperance card inspires hope that internal changes will occur in a person, and relationships will acquire calm, idyll, and tolerance. You and your partner will accept mutual obligations, begin to develop together, and acquire a balance of power.

If you are single, then you should look for harmony and balance in other areas of your life to make room for a loving partner who will come into your life.

Inverted position

In a reversed position, the card indicates conflicts and clashes caused by imbalances in relationships. This may be the result of the fact that one of you, on your part, shows more care and attention than you see in return from your partner. Or perhaps the love and respect you show is not reciprocated by your partner.

There is a lack of harmony in the relationship. Constant arguments, reproaches, shouting, unwillingness to listen to each other. Try to calm down and find peace within yourself, this will help you take a more sober and rational approach to solving any problems you encounter.

If you are single, the card suggests that you begin to trust and open up to people you are interested in too early. You are too impatient and are ready to fall in love with the first person you meet who smiles at you, leaving the stage of acquaintance and recognition for later.

This indicates indiscriminateness on your part, which in most cases brings grief and disappointment. Be patient, you don't have to be actively searching all the time. Don't rush or try to start a relationship after you get to know the person. Just relax, try to create your own inner world and let the new romance develop at its natural pace.

Career

Direct position

Professionally, Temperance tells you that now is the time to set goals as you have the patience and persistence to achieve what you want. Your serious approach to work and dedication will be noticed by management, and you will be on the list of the best employees. If you are hoping for a promotion, the card instructs you to take your time, be patient and not grab the first opportunity presented if there is a chance for something better and more, but for this you must wait.

(/In a financial context, everything should be going well because your finances are completely balanced and under control. Spending does not exceed income, profits are growing, and frequent bonuses are taking place. Having once experienced financial turmoil due to mistakes and failures, you have learned to be more careful and behave wisely with money, save, and control your own waste.

However, be careful, moderation in monetary manipulation is the best solution, since now is not the time to increase your savings at what you think is a sustainable pace. Do not make any investments, leave the money untouched, it will be safer.

You are one of those people who are unlikely to get rich, but will always have a stable income. Thrift, prudence, proper housekeeping are your faithful helpers.

Inverted position

When reversed, the Arcana can mean tension or conflict in a work situation. Perhaps you work too much, which causes the envy of others, or, conversely, you do not work well and fruitfully, which in turn pits you against colleagues and management. You may ignore or react negatively to constructive criticism.

Whatever the problem, you need to look inside yourself to calm down and find harmony with your own energy in order to solve this situation.

Financially, if you have problems, you need to immediately nip them in the bud. Keep an eye on expenses, which may depend on your emotions, since you are currently seeking peace in worldly pleasures, and you will have to pay for them.

And as we know, any waste is expensive. You need to slow down and reconnect with yourself, focusing on yourself in order to find peace. Excessive spending will bring you debt, not inner peace!

Health

Direct position

In the context of health, the card indicates that moderation is the key to good health, so if you need to exercise moderation regarding bad habits, now is the right time to do so. A healthy body is a symbiosis of soul and body that are in harmony.

Spiritual and physical health will delight you, provided you observe moderation in all areas: nutrition, physical and emotional stress, work. The card advises doing yoga, getting acquainted with meditation, cleansing the body through therapeutic fasting, all this will renew you both outside and inside. All this will give you true relaxation, you will isolate yourself from the world and experience true freedom.

When Moderation falls out, perhaps we are talking about a recovery period, rehabilitation, where the strictest restrictions in nutrition and movement are necessary. In the upright position, the card may relate to pregnancy or the restoration of the reproductive system.

Inverted position

Moderation in the context of health is a clear indicator that you have lost control of yourself, and this is negatively affecting your health. Gluttony, nicotine, alcohol abuse, fornication - all this leads to obesity, alcoholism, respiratory system disorders, and sexually transmitted infections. The reason for this behavior is a lack of harmony with oneself.

This Arcanum has a healing nature, but if it falls upside down to a sick person, then you should pay attention to the work of the kidneys (two cups and pouring water). The card indicates stagnant processes, metabolic problems, frequent intoxication, infertility, and operations. Pay attention to traditional medicine, cleansing teas, plant foods, relaxing massages.

The card advises to be calm and cool-headed in any situation.

Believing in yourself will fuel your confidence and determination. Don't be afraid to act, your inner peace is unshakable. Balance and harmony are your companions along the path of life you have chosen. It is filled with deep thoughts, and remember, you are always under the protection of your Guardian Angel.

Moderation is a card of beauty, joy, silence and harmony. It is a powerful image of light and restoration.

It is considered a happy omen (one of the traditional meanings is “the right outcome”) and brings a beneficial influence into the scenario.

Moderation brings a softening of disagreements and a reduction in tension, although at the same time it usually indicates that a person is undergoing some kind of test. A promise that the situation will calm down and become clearer. A way out of the impasse will be found, the seemingly insoluble problem will be overcome, resistance will be exhausted.

On this map, without noise and dust, what seemed impossible happens. Appearing in a reading, it indicates that what you want can be achieved with patience and self-control. This card is in charge of adaptation, adaptation and compromise, a neutral and even line of behavior. Humility and submission (or, as it is written in ancient commentaries, “a combination of ideas that create a moral and righteous life”).

Harmonization of all aspects of existence, a period of stable development (“plateau”), an ideal state, unity with oneself and with the world. The joy of existence, a virtuous and measured life without tension. Harmony is the most important thing in life, when everything breathes peace, harmony and expediency, and is kept within reasonable limits without much difficulty. With Moderation, contrasts are blurred, wounds are healed, pressing issues are resolved, and strength is restored.

Prognostically, it means stabilization in business and success, as well as the fact that victory awaits in the fight against the vicissitudes of fate (with virtuous, wise and correct behavior in accordance with the meaning of the Arcanum). Obstacles will be overcome as water wears away a stone. Moderation indicates a favorable outcome of events, but warns that one should not hope for a forced decision - the matter will progress slowly, but without any special obstacles. Moderation reminds you that you won’t get far on passion alone, steam will quickly run out and the pursuit of some mega-goal will end with you simply running out of steam and falling. This is the need to save energy and not waste time in order to reach the goal, and to show restraint. As a significator of a question, Temperance suggests that a person strives to do the best and is looking for the right solution to the issue.

Moderation is compassionate and merciful. When surrounded by unfavorable cards, it softens their negative meaning.

Zen-like, calm and peaceful.

We are at peace with ourselves and calmly perceive what is happening. This card corresponds to that happy state when a person feels good, loves himself and is in harmonious balance with the world around him. This card corresponds to peace of mind. The serenity of Moderation frees you from pain, anxiety, and fear.

In general, this is the ability to wisely restrain one’s behavior and not go to extremes, to live a well-balanced, harmonious, quiet and wise life, in which there is everything necessary and nothing superfluous. The experience of a peaceful, serene, calm existence, the absence of clinging to the superficial aspects of life. The ability to live lightly, modestly and joyfully, to get by on little and at the same time be in peace and harmony with oneself and everyone around. Experience silence and serenity, maintaining balance and peace at the very center of your being. Overcoming contradictions, healing from them, deepening into oneself.

No aggressiveness or bitterness.

This is a precious experience of “internal maneuvering” without unnecessary movements, the art of maintaining and maintaining balance in the soul at the most problematic moment of life, in a tense stressful situation, when you can lose the remnants of health, nerve cells and common sense. Great internal discipline, restraint, very precise behavior. Slowness, equanimity and self-control. Nothing unsettles you, no throwing from one extreme to another, the ability to stay within reasonable limits in everything. Calmness and self-confidence, self-control, wisdom, restraint. The ability to limit one’s impulses, the absence of acute, unbridled reactions (“the ability to limit oneself in irritation, passion, desire”).

Balance and peace as the main imperative when resolving moral issues and choosing the right course of action.

The patience of Temperance is different from the patience of the Hanged Man. According to the Hanged Man, there are times when it seems that nothing is happening in life, stagnation sets in that nothing can be done about, or we are forced to sacrifice something. Moderation is rather patience in danger, in a tense situation. "Patience in danger is victory." To the impatient, moderation is boring, and calm and impartiality are impossible. There is some similarity here with the Seven of Pentacles - you cannot speed up the growth of a tree or the ripening of fruits. As Hollander wrote, “it just takes time for the bread to bake.” The forces you have set in motion are working. All you need is patience. While you wait, everything moves forward at its own pace, and if you rush from corner to corner, things will not speed up at all. This time can and should be lived calmly and usefully. In this life we are accustomed to constantly doing something and fighting something, but Moderation says that there are times without war. Times when you don't have to do anything special. Events develop according to natural laws and will give results in due time. They don't need to be pushed.

“You just have to learn to wait, you have to be calm and stubborn.” Moderation advises spending some time in a quiet pool before plunging into the whirlpool again.

The person described by Temperance is a self-sufficient person in the best sense of the word. He is not capricious or eccentric, he controls his moods and is not influenced by other people's emotions. People are willing to approach him because he is usually in a clear and friendly mood. Sometimes Moderation is reproached for mediocrity, mediocrity, colorlessness (“a personality devoid of expressiveness”). In fact, it is rather attractiveness and at the same time modesty, lack of panache. The beauty of this man lies in his colossal endurance and self-control. He understood perfectly well that being fixated on one (“correct”) point of view will not lead to anything good and you need to be able to look at any question from different sides, then the solution comes by itself according to the principle “the morning is wiser than the evening.”

This is a person without special inclinations, who is well treated and highly valued. He is flexible, changeable, knows how to adapt to the flow of life and avoids excessive addictions completely instinctively. One must be able to see and appreciate its proportionality, beauty and subtlety. People for the most part are unobservant, do not peer into their surroundings and notice only what catches their eye. The Man of Temperance does not catch the eye, but once you see him, you can’t stop quietly admiring him. He is characterized by harmony of mind, body and soul, he managed to come to an agreement with himself and learned to “simply live wisely.” He has a light hand. If he sincerely wished you good luck, luck will not slow down - his words work like a blessing.

Allegorically, Temperance corresponds to one of the seven virtues - abstinence.

It is associated with the ancient custom of diluting wine with water. This is a symbol of “right measure,” just as the Devil speaks of lack of measure. Temperance describes that subtle alchemy that is constantly happening in the Universe.

The Arcana depicts an Angel with two cups in his hands, the contents of which are constantly pouring from one cup to another, since the upper vessel, when filled, changes places with the lower one. This is how life flows from the visible to the invisible and back. The sun (or beam of light) on the angel's forehead controls the flow of water, which, being raised into the air by the sun's rays, returns to the earth in the form of rain, to be raised again, and so on ad infinitum.

The interpretation of this card is associated with the shape of a circle, which symbolizes a constant creative process closed within itself, leading to the transformation of the world and the redistribution of resources in it in their new quality. This is a constant flow of vital forces in nature and the necessity for Life to mix elements.

This is a card of the highest alchemy, Magnum Opus, it corresponds to the principle of solve et coagula - dissolution and connection, reunification on a new level of what was separated. A state when the material and spiritual, the worldly and the heavenly are combined naturally and harmoniously, and nothing is suppressed. The meaning of life flows from one vessel to another, the contents of the soul - from the body and the body, from embodiment to embodiment, symbolizing the flow of the past through the present to the future. By successfully connecting past and present, unlimited possibilities can be realized. It is also a softening of the soul. It should truly become like a beautiful blade, combining flexibility and hardness. There is a successful combination of past and present experience into a beautiful whole, the dissolution of the highest in the worldly and the worldly in the highest, the androgynous union of the masculine and feminine principles, the successful combination of opposites. The impossible is easy, liberation from unbearable tension comes.

Moderation encourages us to listen to the signs so that we can feel our true path and not allow public opinion to control us. An angel is a mediator and messenger of God's will; from a psychological point of view, it is that part of the personality that connects us with our innermost essence and helps us understand it. Filadoro writes that the wings of an Angel are an impulse that frees us from routine, allowing us to understand the needs of the spirit and yield to them. According to Moderation, there is a search for one’s “center,” the very foundations of existence, the core of creation, the inner “stone of the temple.” This is the Great Work of alchemists, work on oneself, transformation of the psyche, Transfiguration, alchemical transformation of the soul.

This is the ability to balance earthly needs and the needs of the unconscious (stand with one foot on the ground and the other in the water). By sacrificing one for the other, a person loses integrity, becomes one-sided and fruitless. Transformation of “ignoble material” into something sublime and special. According to Moderation, the synergy of the “two bowls”, the two sides of life, is established so that it can be enjoyed.

It is also a subtle alchemical interaction with the mystical lover, anima or animus, a deep experience of intimacy. The internal impulse is the reunification at a new level of what was separated, the union of opposites at the highest level. The card indicates the need to activate certain aspects of the personality that have hitherto been hidden or have been suppressed or neglected, to restore balance and consciously supplement one’s actions with something opposite, and the spectrum of internal perception with a new point of view. Agree with yourself, resonate with the Cosmos (this means that you have learned the lesson of the Hanged Man, which made you look at what is happening differently). This is impossible to achieve without constant work on your personality and a deep (at the same time rational and intuitive) understanding of your own behavior.

The androgynous character of Temperance corresponds to the “alchemical wedding” of the Lovers - fire and water become one, moreover, they become “each other”, that is, a total interchange takes place. Even just drawing in one’s imagination a portrait of an ideal partner, inner female emotionality reveals its masculine outlines, and masculine emotionality reveals its feminine outlines.

The meaning of this Arcana connects the Sun and the Moon (male and female, conscious and unconscious spheres) - the clear daytime mind of the Sun and the lyrical emotions of the Moon. On the map, this idea is symbolized by two cups - gold and silver: a stream from the first flows into the second. The gold of the Sun, which represents the spirit, is transformed into the silver of the Moon, which represents the soul. An idea moves from the spiritual sphere to the spiritual, and the flow of emotions contributes to the further embodiment of the thought. The fluid flowing between the vessels is the nectar of immortality or living water.

Many decks on the Arcana of Temperance depict a cauldron, evoking memories of the magic cauldron from fairy tales, from which the heroes emerged transformed, young, beautiful, invulnerable. Such changes do not occur without pain - everything that is self-centered and empty must boil away and be washed away, and after this decent “bath” a person will be reborn like a Phoenix bird. Deep down, Moderation is as strong as steel. The Arrow, also often depicted on this Arcana, indicates the search for the spirit hidden in matter, and symbolizes the internal process of awareness that occurs as a result of the Great Work. The rising sun in the background, shaped like a crown, is a symbol of spiritual rebirth, the dawn of consciousness, the Mystery of Eternal Life. A road leads to it from the reservoir near which the Angel stands, the path of Temperance. Blooming irises are considered the Western equivalent of the lotus, the water lily. This is a symbol of non-identification with anything and refusal of illusory belonging to any one world. The lotus reminds that everything in this world stems from one another and alchemically connects all the elements with each other: the roots rest in the ground, the stem is in the water, the leaves are open to the air, and the flower reaches for the sun. Stones also carry meaning. They are connected to the Earth, which provides strength and support, and are endowed with powerful healing powers.

Harmonization of one’s ideas, which previously seemed impossible, overcoming total contradictions, removing internal resistance, getting out of an insoluble situation, healing from the extremes of antagonism. This is great creativity and a decisive step on the path to karmic healing (at the same time, you cannot cling to banal truths and social attitudes - everything is a little subtler and deeper).

This seems somewhat dubious, but there is an opinion that Temperance astrologically correlates with the sign of Sagittarius, “affirming a high worldview in the world, and with the concept of human genius, making progress. Sagittarius, as a conductor of Heavenly will to Earth, reveals the idea of evolution (the downward movement of development): - this is the path of ideas to earthly reality. Since Sagittarius is a rational sign, it can also be compared with the circle of mental knowledge that the Magician draws around himself in order to protect from the evil spirits those entities that he evokes with his mental activity and communication with which is fraught with surprises.” Sagittarius is an ideological sign; it promotes high spiritual achievements.

In a deep sense, inverted Temperance is a river of time flowing backwards, allowing you to return to the past and enter the stream of life in a place other than where you came from. The Angel's actions indicate the cycle of life in which the spirit is purified. But, of course, this occult meaning appears infrequently, and in addition, it has its price (the risk of losing balance).

Occult and spiritual meaning

This is the stage in personal development that symbolically follows "Death". By and large, it comes when a person has already suffered and known so much that he “died” for the world below and came to life for the heavenly, and therefore can find true peace. The use of an angel as a primary figure symbolizes the idea that we are capable of rising to the angelic level if we can learn this lesson. Sometimes this literally means a radical spiritual transformation through faith, a conscious choice of “angelic living” (monasticism) and a loss of interest in worldly goals. But this is not necessarily connected with turning to the church. In approximately the same holy and quiet state, people leave the intensive care unit, where they almost gave up their lives and radically revised their values.

In reality, we are terribly tenacious, and the “killing” events symbolized by the thirteenth Arcanum are repeated many times in life and are very diverse. They can look like poor health, or like the loss of a job, or like the end of a relationship.... After we have been “killed” by one of our Deaths (XIII), we always choose with whom to continue our journey - with an Angel (XIV) or with a Devil (XV). At this point in the deck the path forks. The angel offers the path of humility, wise acceptance, calmness, forgiveness and release. The devil is the path of rebellion, passions, the “burnt road”, following which a person tries to find his happiness in struggle, but in fact gives his soul to be torn to pieces by lower astral entities (becomes a slave to instincts) and degrades. If we choose the path of the Devil, retribution finds us faster, so the next Arcana is the Tower. The angelic reward lingers longer, it is carried by the Star. If Temperance appears after a problematic card, this is a victory over the vicissitudes of fate and a path to the right actions (this is well known to everyone who was somehow led “out of the abyss” by a merciful guardian angel, from which they no longer dreamed of getting out).

The Arcana essentially displays the Spiritual Guide, the precise inner voice that says what is good and what is not, and where there is moderation in everything. This is a guide on the road of life, a Guardian Angel, instilling confidence and leading exactly along the path along which you have to move.

Despite its apparent simplicity, Moderation is one of the most difficult Arcana. It seems to personify peace and quiet, but the paradox is that its meaning can truly be comprehended only in the thick of a tough test of strength, when it seems that all reserves of this very strength have long been exhausted. The figure of this Angel is distinguishable not so much in itself as against the background of the hellish glow that incinerates life, or some part of it. Seeing it against the background of everyday life is aerobatics, a precious skill acquired at a rather high price.

Moderation describes the basic processes of internal learning and growth, or more precisely, that moment beyond the control of the will when a mass of disparate skills merges into a single whole and... we have learned! Finally, what we have struggled with, tormented, and pondered for a long time is suddenly illuminated by light and formed into a single new understanding.

There is an imperceptible transition from quantity to quality, and it is not without reason that Moderation is a card of alchemy and transformation of the psyche. Internal transformation according to Moderation is outwardly subtle, it is hidden. This is, first of all, the resolution of some internal conflict, the calming of insoluble internal resistance, a way out of the vice. According to Moderation, true harmony is established between desires, feelings, thoughts, the process of personality integration occurs, integrity is restored, and an optimal wise line of behavior is developed, largely related to self-control. In general, a sense of proportion is an excellent antidote to many physical and spiritual problems, the power of which we usually underestimate. In fairness, it must be said that this Major Arcana, among others, is also often underestimated.

Moderation is both law and miracle. No problem can be truly solved at the level of thinking (with the “approach”) that gave birth to it. To achieve a solution, one must rise above obvious and superficial concepts and reach a qualitatively new level of understanding. Only in this way can freedom from tension be achieved, only this becomes a step towards healing. Moderation often falls to people in whose lives, quite recently, there were violent changes, some kind of radical restructuring was underway, and events replaced each other with such speed that there was no time to analyze what was happening. But now, after all these everyday storms and worries, a stage has come when life flows smoothly and slowly. And this change of rhythm, of course, affected the consciousness and perception of the environment. Appearing in the layout, Moderation says that in any case, patience, comprehension, and calm are required from the questioner.

The value of cooperation, the ability to benefit from someone else's point of view. Respectful and friendly relations. Moving away from selfish disputes, struggles for power, from vanity and chaos, conflict resolution. The need to make compromises, remove contradictions and resistance.

A real “alchemical” team, where everyone complements each other and actualizes their own and others’ potential to the maximum. By the way, the team itself can engage in activities more associated with the Tower than with a quiet backwater - it could be a team of surgeons, a fire brigade, or a sabotage group behind enemy lines. But the ability to perfectly coordinate one’s actions comes precisely from Moderation. It helps to optimally use all available resources to achieve a positive result. Sometimes this map is used to merge organizations into a single new whole.

A profession that requires calmness, self-control, the ability to behave accurately and carefully (as they say, “according to protocol”), or very precise coordination in movements (sometimes truly jewelry-like). This could be a microsurgeon, an intelligence officer, or a graphic designer. A profession related to the establishment of proportions and correspondences (for example, pharmacist, homeopath, aromatherapist), relaxation and healing (SPA). Of course, healers pass through Temperance. Also, people who know a lot about “mixing products” are cooks and chefs.

Mediators, peacemakers, “team builders” - specialists in establishing team cooperation, casting and personnel selection specialists.

Teacher, guru. Teacher's talent.

Since Moderation is associated with the “right measure,” activities related to calculation, evaluation, compensation, and the like can take place through it.

Balance between work and rest. No extreme. Peaceful, serene, easy and calm performance of tasks that were previously solved under terrible tension and stress. There is no division into important and “extra” things (which can lead to a nervous breakdown when “extra” things seem to prevent one from getting started with the important ones) - every thing is important and worthy of being done well.

“Rich is not the one who has a lot, but the one who has enough.”

Moderation hints at a mode of economy in finances and rarely pleases those who dream of great wealth. But it is understood, felt and appreciated by those who have ever lost their financial balance, as a rule, due to their own carelessness and immoderation.

Having tasted the bitter consequences of extravagance, having experienced fear and the inability to make ends meet, a person welcomes newfound frugality, self-control and prudence as his best friends.

Moderation gives the ability to live with needs that correspond to the current situation. It puts an end to self-indulgence and begins to smooth out financial affairs after shocks. Economy, reasonable housekeeping.

Balance between earnings and expenses. Willingness to help others.

Can mean successful contacts abroad: travel, business relationships or even relocation (“mixing cultures”).

Moderation appears dispassionate, meek and submissive.

She describes a situation where balance, goodwill and understanding reign between partners rather than “African passion”. It may seem boring, but for those who are already fed up with African passions and are torn to shreds by them, the soft light of Temperance is truly like a gift from heaven. The Merciful Angel flew by, waved his wing over the battlefield, and peace reigned. This is a card for healing mental wounds (sometimes almost fatal) that people have managed to inflict on each other. Compromises, well-balanced actions and the absence of gross unnecessary movements according to Moderation usually come when people have already caused each other a lot of acute pain. By the way, sometimes Moderation also speaks of blind adaptation, when partners desperately try to adapt to each other so as not to upset them again (or one of them does this, but cannot understand what the other needs).

This card speaks of resolving problems in your personal life and restoring the harmony of relationships. This seems to be enough to interpret the alignment, but not enough for true understanding. The cause of these very “problems in personal life” is usually some kind of antagonism, obvious or hidden opposition to someone or something in a relationship, and this is a difficult experience. The relationship itself may not exist at all, but the person is already in advance (or retroactively) internally opposed to the partner or something that this relationship can bring into his life, and which he cannot accept. Relationships are not formed precisely because of this antagonism, the nature of which is not completely clear to the person himself. In this case, Moderation heralds the hope that something in the psyche will transform, the opposition will soften, a person will come to terms with something - in himself, in another, in the nature of relationships, in this world in general. For example, an understanding will come that the other is no less and no more defenseless in front of you than you are in front of him. Mercy and tolerance will be added. And, as a consequence of internal changes, the situation on the external plane will change for the better.

If confrontation, intransigence and imbalance (for example, one gives much more than he receives) exist in the existing relationship, Moderation also brings healing and balance of power. It gives a wise attitude towards a partner, the absence of inflated demands or the desire to remake and correct him. In essence, Moderation teaches us a humane attitude towards a loved one, the ability to take his point of view. This is not so much unconditional love as deep humility with the nature of another person as it is, its acceptance and contemplation from the point of view of its value - it has the right to be that way and you need it for development.

The best thing that can happen according to Moderation is that “extremes converge” and form a beautiful, harmonious and lasting whole.

The best that can be done is everything possible to overcome contradictions and resistance, soften disagreements, and heal the situation internally. Moderation speaks of emotional maturity. The bowls on the Arcana correspond to the element of water (emotions), and pouring water from one bowl to another speaks of the need to take into account the feelings of both, to be more neutral, not to impose your aspirations on the other, not to put pressure on the situation, but to try to gently join in its rhythm and in the life of the other person.
Moderation describes the balance between autonomy and intimacy, independence and commitment, fusion and personal development, the balance of power in a partnership is true equality, the perfect combination of the two halves. In general, it inspires hope, this is an omen of a successful partnership, especially if there are some other cards in the layout that indicate a connection between two people.

Sexually Temperance heralds harmony, gentleness and a tantric exchange of energies (which is possible even in the absence of penetrative sex). Abstinence, the habit of limiting oneself in passion (but the meaning of this card is not in refusal, but in harmony, achieving the right rhythm). This is a compatibility card.

Compatibility and consistency, ability to coordinate actions, patience and calmness in the flow. Willingness to learn diplomacy and mutual understanding. Taking into account the feelings of both sides, compromise, the golden mean. The ability to simply find the rhythm of the situation, let go and look from the outside (or go to peace, reach agreement).

Happiness, satisfaction, peace and harmony according to Moderation are manifested both in relationships and alone with oneself. It should be noted that for a person described by Moderation, convenience, comfort and the absence of suffering and extremes are of very great importance.

He highly values everything that brings renewal of mental and physical strength and rejects what kills them. For him, the most important thing is tranquility, balance of life, peace and serenity. If relationships seem to him to be a source of hassle, then he will not stay with this source for long. If there is also a Hermit or a Jester nearby, apparently the suitcases are packed.

The main function of Moderation is to maintain a person’s physical and spiritual life. Therefore, it is a most powerful card of healing and rebirth. If the question concerns health, mental or physical, then Moderation means good health or recovery.

Mental and physical health, the body as a temple of the soul (the question is how much you respect the soul), hence a sense of proportion and a healthy lifestyle. Moderation in everything, the ability to stay sober, follow a diet, deny yourself the tasty morsel of wrong behavior. This is not cruelty and asceticism, but the ability to wisely treat your own body. The image has a reference to the ancient tradition of diluting wine with water (at that time it was believed that undiluted wine was drunk only by intemperate people, drunkards).

This card describes the restoration of lost connections with the body, the ability to hear and understand it again. Meditation, merging with the flow, silence and serenity, when nothing unsettles you. Rest and cleansing of the body and soul. Renewal of spiritual and physical strength. Softening, relaxation, restoration. Healing reflection, concentration and contemplation, evaluation, comprehension and abstinence from unnecessary actions.

By and large, Moderation is an extremely healthy and healing card, and in a painful way it can be interpreted rather if it fell to a obviously unhealthy person as the source of an illness. It can talk about stagnation in the body, metabolic disorders. Temperance most literally corresponds to the kidneys and everything connected with them (the two “cups” and the overflowing “water”).

Moderation is psychosomatic - just as the state of the body affects the soul, so the state of mind is reflected in the body. Moderation often falls to people who have undermined their health through disgraceful treatment, and whose life looks like a continuous extreme situation.

It may indicate a recovery period, post-operation, when a person must observe not only food restrictions, but also accuracy and caution even in movements (for example, so that the stitches do not come apart).
Inverted Temperance is considered one of the indicators of infertility (in the astrological sense - something like the defeat of Proserpina, a violation of the processes of “internal alchemy”). In the upright position it is sometimes related to conception and reproductive abilities. The liquid in the jugs symbolizes the vital fluid released from the bodily shell.

Lack of harmony, failure to integrate, disunity or failed alliances (eg, socially unacceptable partnership, troubled marriage, relationship breakdown, family breakdown). Here, by the way, it’s not far from other “bad excesses”. Ill-considered actions, tendency to excess. Wasting, excessive expenditure of effort and money, unbridledness. Energy imbalance. Reversed Temperance says that a person is completely out of balance and must somehow restore it.

A large number of tasks at once that cannot be combined in any way, as a result, stalemate situations arise when there is no longer any need to talk about any kind of harmony (at least the meaning of a healthy lifestyle). Failed test. A warning that you will not have enough strength to reach your goal.

Disagreements, discord, conflict of interests, breakdown of contracts.

Wrong views on life and wrong approach to people. Excessive emotionality, short temper, sudden changes in mood, unreasonable and unpredictable actions, overreactions. Conflict, eccentricity, capriciousness, imbalance. Hostility, incompatibility, inability to adapt and work with others. Impatience, frustration, disappointment. Fanaticism, stubbornness in one’s point of view, the ability to see only one side of the coin. Here are difficulties in learning, mastering new views or skills.

As it was once wisely noted, the inverted Temperance is “asceticism based on wealth”: the case when a person has money, but the lifestyle (thanks to which this money, in general, appears) does not allow him to use it and extract from it some benefit for yourself. This is a version of the “Order of the Poor Knights”, where nothing personally belongs to anyone (and in places is reeling from fatigue and exhaustion), but the organization itself as a whole has acquired unprecedented wealth. Or the powerful of this world, who in theory can afford everything, but the position he holds does not allow him such an opportunity.

With inverted Moderation, a variety of regulatory systems, both purely technical and procedural (for example, financial), can fail.

With the Jester - advice to think through your actions so as not to repeat previous mistakes

With the Empress - improving relationships, sexual harmony, successful birth of a child. Sometimes it's a romantic trip.

With the Emperor - the need to be flexible in communicating with people and “look at issues more broadly.” Reach your goal in a gentle way.

With Lovers - advice not to take matters too seriously, show calm and patience

With the Tower - extremes, breaks, the effect of Moderation is weakened

With the World - unity, synthesis, healing, a very strong combination

With the Five of Wands - disagreement, competition, imbalance, the effect of Temperance is weakened

With the Five of Swords - falling out of the general tone, command, disharmony in relationships

With the Ace of Cups - abstinence, diet, sobriety, fasting.

With the Two of Cups - connection, relationships, teamwork, cards mutually reinforce each other

With the Two of Pentacles - finding a harmonious combination, the cards mutually reinforce each other

With the Three of Pentacles - teamwork, the effect of Moderation is enhanced

“Check and measure your strength, but not in order to retreat from the task, but in order to overcome obstacles.”

“To the doctor, heal yourself.”

Moderation largely corresponds to the appearance and method of action of “Johan Weiss” from the film “Shield and Sword”.

Today we will talk about the amazingly beautiful, soft and harmonious Arcana, which is the fourteenth in the deck. Moderation Tarot almost always has a positive meaning, although sometimes the Arcanum can also report a series of difficulties - however, coming to an end. The balanced energy of the card is felt by its other names: Angel of Life, Perfect Balance, Art (in the Thoth Tarot), Guide of the Soul, True Measure, Temperance. But let's talk in more detail.

General description of the card, plot and meaning in the layout

Traditionally, we analyze the plot illustrating the Arcana using the Rider-Waite deck. The picture shows a beautiful angel with red wings standing against the backdrop of a picturesque landscape. The Angel stands with his bare feet in the water, and in his hands there are two bowls, from which water smoothly pours into one another. In the background we see the shining sun, mountain peaks, green grass with beautiful yellow flowers. The illustration creates a peaceful mood and it immediately becomes clear that the meaning and interpretation of the 14th Arcana of the Tarot will be bright, favorable, and calm.

Despite the fact that in most classic decks the card image resembles Waite’s, I would like to note the representation of this Arcana in the Thoth Tarot. Aleister Crowley called this card Art and asked artist Frieda Harris to depict on it the alchemical process, the consummation of the wedding of a white woman with a black king. Stunningly beautiful illustration that's worth a look even if you don't work with this deck.

The meaning of the Temperance Tarot card is built around the following key phrases:

  • Overcoming contradictions
  • Equilibrium
  • Harmony
  • Perfect balance
  • Correct proportion
  • Abstinence
  • Device
  • Adaptation
  • Compromise

Meaning 14 Arcana in upright position

What could Abstinence Tarot mean? Coming in a scenario, it always brings a favorable, calm period, clarification of the situation, mitigation of disagreements, stability. Even if at the moment a person is surrounded by some difficulties, Temperance promises that they will definitely be overcome if he shows self-control and patience. Under this card there is no tension at all, a person feels whole, feels harmony, lightness. Things are moving very slowly, but certainly in the right direction. The fourteenth Arcana usually softens the effect of negative cards dropped in the neighborhood.

The meaning of the card in an inverted position

The inverted Temperance Tarot takes on the opposite meaning. If the direct Arcanum pointed to connection and harmony, then the reverse one, on the contrary, indicated separation, the inability to find a compromise, imbalance, and conflict. Sometimes the card speaks of redundancy, which can manifest itself through too impulsive actions, an unreasonable reaction to what is happening, and excessive emotionality. She reports that there is a high risk of not completing a task or not achieving the desired results due to the fact that a person cannot find balance.

The meaning of Temperance Tarot in relationships and love readings

Based on the symbolic field of the Arcana, it is easy to guess what the meaning of Tarot Moderation in love will be, but to complete the picture we must dwell on this point in more detail.

Straight position

Harmonious, stable relationships, the smooth flow of a romance without an explosion of emotions and intense passions, the unity of opposites that unites partners, the restoration of the world after a period full of difficulties - all these are the meanings of Tarot Moderation in relationships. Temperamental people who value bright emotions and spontaneity may find this card boring, but for those who are tired of instability and imbalance, the appearance of the Arcana during fortune telling, on the contrary, brings long-awaited calm. Sometimes under this card, especially if it is surrounded by negative Arcana, there can be a strong desire of lovers to adapt to each other, despite the obvious differences between them. What this will lead to will be shown by the neighboring cards.

Inverted position

The opposite meaning of Tarot Moderation in love is the lack of harmony. Under the inverted Arcana, conflicts, quarrels, difficulties occur, an unwillingness and inability to compromise, to give in to a partner, to work on relationships, and to show tolerance is manifested.

The meaning of the card in fortune telling

The interpretation of Arkan in matters of health is very philosophical and subtle. It hints at the importance of balance between the physical body and spiritual life.

Straight position

The main meaning of Tarot Moderation in health is the restoration of a person’s internal, invisible connection with his body. Under this card, the questioner begins to care about balance, harmony, engages in spiritual practices, meditation, and begins to lead a healthy lifestyle. It is important to understand that Moderation is not a strict asceticism, it is just reasonable self-restraint. Asceticism is more likely to manifest itself under an inverted Arcana. Sometimes the card describes a period of rehabilitation after a long illness or hospital stay, when a person re-establishes connection with his body.

Inverted position

A reverse card can signal infertility, disruption of the proper functioning of the kidneys, problems with water balance in the body, as well as an unhealthy lifestyle associated either with excess in food, alcohol, or with severe asceticism, when a person, for example, constantly sits on the strictest diets, goes hungry, refuses many healthy foods.

The meaning of the 14th Arcana when divining personality and psychological state

Let's consider the meaning of Tarot Abstinence if we try to describe with the Arcanum the character, behavior of a person, his state of mental health.

Straight position

A calm, harmonious person who is always in a state of balance. He radiates self-confidence, but at the same time he is not in a hurry, he performs all actions deliberately, and knows how to control himself and his emotions. If we are talking about the state of the psyche, it is calm and poise.

Inverted position

The personality is conflictual, unstable, prone to impulsive actions, unrestrained in the expression of emotions. Such people are usually said to be “at odds with themselves.” On the psychological plane - complete imbalance, situations where a person’s desires and words run counter to his actions.

The meaning of the card in fortune telling for work, business, finance

What can be said about a person’s professional activity if he receives the Balance card? Let's get a look.

Straight position

The main meaning of Tarot Moderation in work is the ability to find compromises, cooperate with other people, and also find a reasonable balance between professional responsibilities and leisure. Under this card there is usually a calm period when there is no tension and rush, there are no unnecessary things to do and all work is done without stress and difficulties. Professions characterized by the map require the ability to behave “according to protocol,” coordination, self-control, and calmness. This includes microsurgery, restoration work, and many other areas of professional activity. Arkan also often points to pharmacists, homeopaths, people working in spas, culinary specialists, cooks, and spiritual teachers. In matters of finance - stable, quiet income.

Reversed position

Lack of balance, conflicts and disagreements within the team, rush jobs and stress, situations when a lot of things appear at the same time and a person does not know what to tackle first. Main meaning of the card

Straight position

The main meaning of the Arcana is harmony, balance, the golden mean. If Moderation appears when divining a situation, then it can be interpreted as a resolution of contradictions; if for a person, then as peace of mind and relaxation, which are inherent in us when we love ourselves and are in balance with the world around us. Another common and very correct interpretation is healing, recovery, overcoming an illness or health crisis (especially together with the Moon). In essence, Moderation is the right, optimally selected measure. It is harmony with nature that the pair “Moderation – Empress” indicates, and the golden mean in behavior (i.e. the need to understand what and where to say and how to behave) – “Moderation – Strength”.

Inverted position

Inverted Moderation is the opposite pole of Moderation in the upright position or the absence of something that is inherent in this Arcanum. Thus, the main meanings in this case are disharmony, discord, thoughtlessness in actions and rashness in judgments. Reversed Temperance can fall to a person who is indecisive but experiencing problems. In this case, people usually behave impatiently, wanting to quickly get out of the “dark” period, but, at the same time, not giving themselves the trouble to weigh and analyze their intentions and actions. If the inverted Temperance appears in a reading next to the Jester, then it is interpreted as fussiness and chaotic actions without any ability (or desire) to calculate them at least a couple of steps ahead. Such an Arcanum, together with the Empress, speaks of pettiness and excessive prudence, with the Hermit - of the inability to fulfill obligations and promises made to oneself (for example, quit smoking, go on a diet, etc.)

Love and relationships

Straight position

For love spells, Moderation symbolizes a very harmonious, comfortable relationship in which people are interested in each other and experience kinship of souls. This Arcanum usually indicates unions in which warmth and simplicity reign, in which partners do not seek self-interest, and one does not try to enjoy any benefits at the expense of the other. And when Moderation in fortune telling is paired with the Priestess, this indicates that two people feel each other very deeply and truly and understand each other perfectly. Another characteristic combination is with Lovers, since such a couple clearly indicates a readiness to compromise in a relationship.

Inverted position

Moderation in an inverted position occurs in relationships when partners are conflict-ridden, quick-tempered, and not inclined to make concessions to each other. Reversed Moderation indicates that one of the partners (or both at once) is often unbalanced, unreasonable, and biased. This Arcanum can also indicate an alliance in which material interests prevail and in which the craving for soft carpets and silk beds is more valuable than comfortable relationships. In addition, inverted Temperance with Justice indicates that the person is not at all romantic; with the Chariot - that a person is characterized by frequent changes of moods and emotions; and with the Five of Cups - that a person is often and persistently visited by thoughts about the futility and doom of the current relationship.

Career

Straight position

In this context, Moderation symbolizes effective teamwork, the ability to find a reasonable compromise between work and rest, and the ability to work at an optimal pace. Among other things, this Arcanum can be interpreted as the removal of contradictions that hindered the progress of a business (undertaking, project, etc.) In combination with the Emperor, Moderation will also suggest that a person is quite capable of organizing his work not only at a speed convenient for himself and a measure of comfort, but also in compliance with a clear routine that will allow you to implement the full scope of responsibilities.

Inverted position

Moderation in an inverted form when fortune telling about a career is interpreted as competition, a clash of interests, an unsuccessful partnership. A person who has an inverted Moderation is likely to often make incorrect judgments about people or the state of affairs, and is biased and unpredictable in his actions. In a situation's scenario, such an Arcanum speaks of its ambiguity and the fact that there is still a lot to go through. It is temperance that is indicated by the inverted Temperance if the Ace of Wands falls next to it. When the Five of Wands appears with her, this should be regarded as major obstacles and active actions of competitors.

Remember: none of the problems can be left to chance. Otherwise, this will definitely come back to haunt you with great difficulties in the future. And in general, boldly take on any task, no matter how difficult it may seem, because you have a wonderful ability - to find original solutions and create something amazing. And try not to conflict or worry about the results in advance.
