How to create a contour drawing in Photoshop. Creating and deleting a path in Coreldraw - simple solutions for the desired effect

Phoroshop program in addition wide possibilities Processing finished images, such as photographs, provides many different possibilities for drawing. You can draw with pencil and brush tools. This immediately creates raster image. You can correct what you have drawn by erasing the created elements with an eraser.

The Pen Tool is designed for drawing vector paths. Vector contours can be saved, edited, enlarged, reduced. The possibilities of this tool are endless. But mastering how to work with it is not easy.

What are contours and why are they needed?

Contours are vector line objects, utility objects that allow you to easily and quickly create interesting images. In general, a contour consists of one or more straight or curved segments. Anchor points mark the position of the end points of path segments. The shape of the path segments is determined by the guides extending from the anchor points.

Outlines themselves in Photoshop have neither thickness nor color. They are an auxiliary tool for performing various actions: selections complex shape, constructing images, for curvilinear arrangement of text (along some curve), etc.

The contour can be closed, having neither beginning nor end (such contours include ellipses and arbitrary polygons),

or open, having separate end points (for example, a zigzag or wavy line).

Contours are saved in the current document together with raster objects. All contours in the document are available in the palette Paths.

What can you do with the contour?

1. Construct any outline, trace it (Stroke Pass command, right-click on the outline - select from the menu) to form a line (specify the stroke tool, having previously selected the color, thickness and other parameters);

2.If the contour is closed, you can paint the inner area with any color (Fill Pass command, right-click on the contour - select from the menu) or convert the contour into a selection (Make Selection command, right-click on the contour - select from the menu).

Drawing shapes (rectangles, ellipses, etc.) is essentially drawing inline contours of a certain shape, the inner area of which is painted in a selected color.

How to draw a free-form outline?

You need to draw the outline with the Pen Tool.

To draw a straight path, you determine the position of the nodes of the path with mouse clicks, and Photoshop automatically connects them with straight lines.

To create a curved segment of a contour, you need to click the point at which the direction of the curve changes and, without releasing the left mouse button, move the pointer. A guide will appear on the canvas (it determines the bend of the segment) and a curve that will bend smoothly as you move the mouse. When the curve takes the required shape and size, you need to release the mouse.

If you hold down the Shift key while working with the tool, a contour of the correct shape will be created (adjacent corner points will be located at angles that are multiples of 45°, and smoothing points will be placed on the arc of an imaginary circle).

Pen Tools

The Photoshop toolbar tool Pen Tool includes several tools:
Pen Tool (Pen) - designed for drawing a vector contour (the contour is specified by a set of its anchor points);
Freeform Pen Tool (Free pen)- intended for drawing a vector contour (the contour is specified by a set of hand-drawn lines);
Add Anchop Point Tool - designed to add new anchor points to an existing vector path, with its help you can change the shape of the path, move nodes or guides;
Delete Anchop Point Tool - designed to delete existing anchor points from a vector path; it can also be used to change the shape of the path, move nodes or guides;
Convert Point Tool (Angle) - designed to change the type of anchor points and the shape of existing vector contours.

By default, the Pen Tool is active in the “Pen” group; to select another tool in this group, you need to right-click on the group button (hold it down for a few seconds), and then click the name of the required tool in the menu that appears on the screen.

A hotkey is also used to call up the tools of the Pen group. "R". Pressing this key activates the last used tool in the group. To switch between instruments in a group, press the key simultaneously. "R" and a key "Shift"(as a result of each click, the next tool in the list is activated).

Pen tool options panel

In the tool options panel Feather The following elements need to be noted:

Then, using the corresponding buttons, you can go directly from the options bar to the Pen Tool, Freeform Pen Tool, Rectangle Tool(Rectangle), Rounded Rectangle Tool (Rectangle with rounded corners), Ellipce Tool (Ellipse), Polygon Tool (Polygon), Line The buttons are responsible for setting one or another mode for combining contours (new contour, adding to an existing contour, subtracting, intersecting contours, etc.) and are similar to the same tool settings discharge.

There are buttons for the Shape Layers mode

  • Style- is intended for selecting the style that will be used when filling the contour. By clicking on the list expansion button, you can view the available samples Photoshop styles CS4
  • Field Color- designed to display and change the contour fill color. When you click on a field on the screen, a color selection dialog box appears in which the user can specify the desired fill color for the outline.

Did you find everything very difficult? Nothing like this! A simple example. Try it, everything will work out!

STEP 1. SCAN AND IMAGE PREPARATION

First of all, you need a drawing with which you will work. To scan an image directly into Photoshop, go to the File – Import menu and select the name of your scanner from the list.

Depending on your scanner model, this window will likely look different for everyone. But the basic principles are the same everywhere. The image must be scanned in high resolution - 300 dots per inch (dpi). If your machine has this option, you can also select a specific area to scan. That's exactly what I did.

After scanning, you may need to make some adjustments to the sketch to make it clearer. Go to the menu Image – Corrections – Levels (Image – Adjustments – Levels). In the Levels window there will be many different options that can be applied to the drawing, but for now we are only interested in the three sliders under the black histogram. By moving the black and white sliders towards the center, you can adjust the light and dark areas of the image. Manipulate them until you get a more or less clear drawing.

For my sketch, it was enough to “tug” only the black slider to get the desired effect.

Since you will subsequently have to outline the drawing with a black outline, you need to adjust the sketch so that it can be easily separated from the pencil lines.

Go to the menu Image – Correction – Color Balance (Image – Adjustments – Color Balance). Make sure the Midtones button is selected and move the Yellow slider all the way to the right. Your drawing will take on a bluish tint.

STEP 2A – HAND CONTOURING

I use two methods to create an outline drawing. You can choose one of them. The first method is to clean up the pencil sketch and use it as an outline drawing.

This drawing will have to be reprinted in order to trace it, however, chances are that the image scanned after this will be slightly smaller. Therefore, after drawing the sketch, you need to enlarge it. The more there will be contour drawing, the easier it will be to hide any mistakes in the future.

Go to the menu Image – Image size. Make sure that the length measurement is set to inches, and also make sure that Constrain Proportions is checked, otherwise your image will be distorted. Now you need to adjust the image in width and/or height so that it fits into the standard parameters of printed paper. For me the easiest way to do this is to install highest resolution 10 inches. For example, my drawing is taller than it is wide, so I make the height 10 inches. The second indicator will be generated automatically, because You have checked the Constrain Proportions option. This is a very useful option.

Now print your drawing on regular printer paper.

Place tracing paper on top of this drawing and secure it with tape. It's better to use paper tape, because it will need to be removed later. Carefully secure the tracing paper over the drawing. Using a very fine pencil (or my favorite, a 0.7mm mechanical pencil) or even a pen if you prefer (but be aware that the ink can easily smear on the tracing paper), outline the design.

Work from left to right (if you're right-handed; if you're left-handed, work in the opposite direction) and be careful not to accidentally place your free hand on the design you just made. Work carefully, otherwise the outline will be blurry.

Also, if you like this method and have a little extra money, you can purchase parchment paper. Of course, it costs more, but I think the result will be of better quality.

After tracing the design, carefully remove the tracing paper and scan again. Remember to select a resolution of 300 dots (dpi).

Now you will need to repeat the levels adjustment process to make the lines sharper and darker.

To prepare a drawing for coloring, you need to do certain things to make those lines usable.

First, in the Layer window, double-click on the background layer that contains your outline drawing. This will make the locked layer editable. Rename this layer to “Links” or “Inks” or whatever you want, as long as it is clear and easy to use.

Then click on the button highlighted with a red marker in the image below to create a new layer.

Make sure you select this new layer and not the outline layer. Go to the menu Layer – New – Background from Layer (Layer – New – Background from Layer). So we'll set this empty new layer as the background.

Lastly, go back to the outline layer. Click on the arrow highlighted in red to open a menu with layer modes. Select the Multiply mode from the list. This mode will turn the layer into something similar to tracing paper or transparent paper. This will allow the colors to show through the white areas around the lines. If you like this method, you can save your sketch as a .psd file, skip step 2B and go straight to step 3.

STEP 2B – CONTOURING IN ILLUSTRATOR

The downsides of digital contouring are that you have less control over the process and the results can come out too harsh and unnatural. The advantages of this method are that you can achieve sharper lines, you can easily and quickly adjust and delete lines, and you can easily make additional changes, such as changing the color of the lines.

Take your original sketch (with all modifications up to point 2A) and save it as a .psd file in Photoshop. Then open Illustrator and create a new document with RGB colors. Also, set the canvas size to a large enough size. I usually choose 8x10 inches.

Now go to the menu File – Place (File – Place) and find the .pds file with your sketch.

You will probably notice that your drawing will be too small for this. large canvas. Your sketch should be as large as possible when contouring, so take the Arrow and stretch the drawing by dragging the circle marks in the corners of the image (remember to hold down the Shift key so as not to distort the drawing) until the sketch looks like this same size as canvas. It's okay if some parts of the image go beyond the canvas. But make sure that the drawing you will trace is strictly within the boundaries of the sheet.

Now create a new layer. The layers menu here is the same as in Photoshop. The button to create a new layer is outlined in red. Name this layer Inks or something else appropriate name. Also remember to lock the sketch layer so you don't accidentally start drawing on it. Just click on the empty square to the left of the layer, a small lock icon will appear there, which will mean that the layer is locked.

Unfortunately, most of the standard brushes that are available in Illustrator are not very suitable for this kind of contouring, so we will have to edit one of the existing ones. First, find the Paintbrush tool (highlighted in the red circle on the left in the picture). Then open the Brushes window, it's somewhere next to the Layers window. Select the first small round brush you find there, then click on the arrow in the top right corner and select Brush Options. In the image below you can see the options that I chose for my brush. If you want, you can select another brush and apply the same settings to it, and save it for another time. I named mine new tool“Inking Brush”. Finally, make sure that the brush stroke control (the black square with a gray center in the bottom right corner of the picture) is switched to black and the fill color is set to transparent ( White square with a red line running diagonally across this square). To change one of the squares to transparent, simply select the desired square and click on the transparency icon (highlighted with a red circle in the very bottom right corner).

I must say that if you don’t have Illustrator, then Photoshop has a similar brush. The only difference is that Photoshop uses pixels and illustrator uses vectors, so you have to work a little more to get smooth lines. Also, sometimes it can be difficult to clean up rough spots in the future. There was a time when I myself used Photoshop for contouring, so it will work if there are no other options.

Now you can move directly to contouring, but there are also pitfalls that you should know about in advance. First, make sure you stay on the Inks Layer and keep the sketch layer locked. Now take your brush and start tracing the contour lines. Each stroke applied will work as a separate editable line. This is very convenient because, subsequently, you can adjust any of these lines. You should also notice how your lines will automatically smooth out as you draw.

However, given that these are vector paths and not pixel lines, there are a few annoyances you should be aware of. When you draw a line, and then another that continues the first, it is not always created in a separate path, but can either extend your first path, or, conversely, layer on it. See what happens if you draw a line in the direction indicated by the red arrow in the picture.

The system automatically corrected the first path, and it now continues the new line. This is, of course, annoying, but this problem can be solved. The first thing you can do is, after each applied stroke, click the menu Select – Remove selection (Select – Deselect). This way you will draw new lines without affecting the old ones.

There is another way to get rid of this problem - just draw towards the already drawn line. Start at a spot that is not in contact with the line you highlighted. This can be a very handy trick.

You can manipulate paths (lines) with both the brush and the cursor. With the cursor, you can, for example, select a path and change its size or angle by tugging on the corners of the selection.

Using a brush you can adjust the lines. Here I drew a line a little shorter than I would like. This is very easy to fix. Simply select this path (this is done by clicking on the line with the cursor) and continue the line as shown in the figure.

Ignore the intersecting lines, like in the picture below, circled in red. If you're using Illustrator, you can easily erase the extra lines later.

To erase part of a line, select the desired path, then find the Eraser in the toolbar (it's circled in red in the picture below).

Using the Eraser, go over the part of the path you want to delete. In the picture below, the red arrow shows the area that I want to remove from my drawing.

And the excess simply disappears... as if by magic!

Although this trick also has its drawbacks. Sometimes "distortion" may appear around the area where you applied the Eraser. If fixing these areas is too difficult, leave everything as is. They can then be carefully corrected in Photoshop.

When you're done, the result should look something like this (picture below):

Almost everything is ready for coloring. Select the sketch layer and click on the trash can icon to delete it, leaving only the outline drawing, as in the image below:

Save your drawing in AI format, make sure that the box that says PDF compatibility is checked, as well as the “Use compression” checkbox. Now close Illustrator and return to Photoshop to open this AI file. Re-save this file in PSD format. And we'll make a couple more changes before we start painting.

Your drawing will look something like the image below. The checkerboard grid shows transparent areas. You need to create a background for this image. To do this, create a new layer, set it as background by clicking Layer – New – Layer from Background.

Now double-click on the name of the layer where your drawing is located (it's the layer called Layer 1 in the layers window), and rename it to something like Lines.

STEP 3 – CROPPING. ADDITIONAL LINE ADJUSTMENT, SIZE CHANGE

I didn't like the way the drawing turned out at the bottom, and some of the lines just ran off the page, so I needed to fix that by cutting off the excess. The Crop tool is circled in red in the toolbar. Draw a rectangle around the area you want to save. I don't want the bottom of the drawing, so I leave it outside the selection.

You can change the shape of the selection as you wish, as long as you have not accepted the changes (this is done by clicking the green check mark at the top of the screen).

Now it's time to deal with those lines that you didn't remove in Illustrator. use the Eraser tool (highlighted with a red circle on the toolbar) small size to carefully remove all excess. I circled the areas that I need to either completely remove or shorten a little (for example, the ends of some hairs need to be sharpened a little).

The two pictures below show examples BEFORE and AFTER erasure.

Next you need to slightly resize the image. I don't like the lack of space between the character and the edges of the canvas at all. Go to the Image – Canvas size menu and enter new size parameters. On the small Anchor table you can see in which direction the image will be stretched. White cube– this is your image, the arrows indicate additional areas to be added to the canvas. Since I'm cropping my image at the bottom, I need to make sure that no new area is added there. I only need to add extra space on the top and sides. To do this, I click on the bottom cube in the middle to secure the canvas.

Prepare another small needle and napkin/cotton pad. Cotton pad we need it just in case - to wipe the needle, for example, and also convenient to have on hand cotton swab- it’s easy to erase what didn’t work out without damaging the rest of the drawing. Today we are drawing a New Year's card with an outline.

1. Degrease the surface, place the sketch with reverse side glass and neatly.

2. Contour Before applying, I squeeze it out a little to understand how fluid it is. From the contours in the image: very liquid, - medium, - thick. About other circuits of Russian manufacturers was mine.

If the composition immediately pours out of the tube - liquid contour. This is very convenient to draw, but the lines will turn out thick and flat, which is sometimes very useful. It is important here to run the circuit at the same speed. If you are delayed somewhere, there will be an influx.

If the composition is thick— the contour is squeezed out with difficulty; its “nose” must be cleaned often with a needle, otherwise it hardens inside and is squeezed out in pieces. Such a contour will turn out to be perfectly smooth if it is drawn not along the glass (like a pen on paper), but slightly above the glass, as if “laying” it straight line, controlling the process.

Also, the thick contour is easy to move or completely remove after it dries a little.

3. In contour drawing on glass the main thing is to adapt. It is advisable to sit upright, with support on your elbow, the outer edge of your palm or your little finger.

4. We start drawing from the upper left corner, because you can erase the outline with your own hand. At the same time, we can make any of the corners of the picture the upper right one by twisting it))). Draw while it's convenient. Believe me, if you are not comfortable, the contour will turn out crooked. Support should be at least on the edge of the little finger.

5. If we draw semicircle or other curved line- this is easy to do with one movement of the hand with a static wrist. Imagine that your hand from your elbow to your fingertips is a compass))). We will draw a circle using the same movement, but in several stages.

6. To draw line without joints, make sure that as soon as the extruded composition comes into slight contact with the previous one, you immediately continue the line, without lingering at the junction of the lines.

7. The hardest thing to draw straight lines. Here you need to practice a little before you get it really smooth. Don’t try to draw the entire line with one movement of your hand, you’re unlikely to succeed anyway. Let them be small strokes at first with a smooth line junction. If the line is small, then draw with one quick and confident movement of your hand.

8. Below sketch for practice.

First we draw the tree itself, then, after the main lines have dried a little, we draw the “decorations”. Decorations can be anything you like. Easiest to draw points, then, when the beginning has been made, we draw waves or any other curls ( example, painted only with curls))) - try it, you will succeed.

It doesn’t have to be straight, the main thing is to be bold))).

9. Then let's try to draw vertical stripes(I recommend drawing lines away from you, practice drawing vertical lines, sometimes it is impossible to rotate the product and this skill is necessary) and horizontal(from left to right).

10. Below we will draw snowdrifts in the form, try to ensure that they are at the same distance from each other.

11. And now the balls - in several stages. Most complex element here is a star. We will try to draw it neatly and evenly - with short, clear strokes.

New Year card ready) Working hours - 10 minutes

About secrets next time.

In this article, we'll look at how you can create an outline for text or an object in an image in Photoshop. This is not at all difficult to do and will take little time. Now you will see this.

How to make a text outline in Photoshop

Let's start with the fact that make an outline for the text in Photoshop. You can have an image with text written on it, or you can create the text yourself by choosing the appropriate size and font.

I wrote the following text using the Horizontal Type Tool and selected the settings for it that are highlighted in the image below.

Now we need to select our text. You can read about different selection methods by following the link. Since the text is monochromatic and has quite a contrast to the background, I will use the Magic Wand Tool.

In the tool settings, select the value “Tolerance” - selects an area with pixels of similar color, and uncheck the box next to “Contiguous” (Adjacent pixels). By unchecking the checkbox, you can immediately select all pixels of a similar color in the entire image, even if areas with a similar color are located in different places.

Click on the text with the Magic Wand. As a result, it will be highlighted. If we left the checkbox next to “Contiguous” (Adjacent pixels), then only one letter we clicked would be highlighted, and we would have to click on each letter to select it.

Now let's circle the text. Place the cursor over the selected area and right-click on it. Select "Make Work Path" from the context menu.

In the next window, set the tolerance value to “Tolerance” and click OK.

The text will be outlined with a thin line. To see it, in the Layers panel, hide the layer on which the text is written - remove the eye in front of it.

Make the text layer visible again. Now you need to create a new layer. To do this, in the layers panel, click on the “Create a new layer” button.

Leave the created layer “Layer 1” selected.

You can make an outline in Photoshop using various instruments: “Brush Tool” (Brush), “Eraser Tool” (Eraser), “Smudge Tool” (Finger) and others. But before you do it, you need to configure the necessary parameters for the tool.

We will create an outline using the Brush Tool. Therefore, select it on the toolbar and set the desired parameters. I chose a stiff brush size 7 in light green.

After that, select “Path Selection Tool” from the toolbar.

Click inside the selected path and select “Stroke Path” from the menu.

In the next window, from the drop-down list, select the tool with which we will make the contour. Select the tool that you configured in the previous step. I use the “Brush Tool”. Click OK.

The text will be outlined. In the example, with a light green brush.

To remove the thin gray line that originally outlined the text, press Backspace. In the picture, a dark stripe is visible through the light contour - this will remove it.

That's all - we made an outline for the text in Photoshop.

You can save an image on a transparent background, and then add it to any other, without white background. Read the article by following the link.

For this example this is done like this: unlock the “Background” layer, delete the “Background” and “site” layers, save the image in *.png or *.gif format.

How to make an outline for an image

Now let's consider how to make an outline for an object in an image. Let's create an outline for this rose.

You can create an outline of anything: a person, a building, an animal.

Open the image or photo in Photoshop. Now you need to select the object. I'll use the Quick Selection Tool.

Select it and click on the rose. If an unnecessary part of the image is mistakenly selected, hold down “Alt” and click on it with the mouse to subtract this area from the selection.

When you highlight desired object, right-click on it and select “Make Work Path” from the menu. Our rose will be outlined with a thin gray line.

In the layers palette, create a new layer and leave it selected.

Now proceed to setting up the tool with which you will make the outline. I will have a “Brush Tool” (Brush) size seven, black.

Select “Path Selection Tool” from the toolbar. Click the mouse inside the selected path and select “Stroke Path” from the menu.

In the next window, select the tool you configured.

If you turn off the visibility of the main layer, you get the following. You can delete a thin gray outline line using the Backspace key.

Now, with a thin brush, let's draw some outlines inside the image. Turn on the visibility of the rose layer.

We will draw on the layer where the outline is selected, so “Layer 1” should be active.

I chose black for the brush, size 4, and traced all the lines inside the rose.

What do children draw most often? Of course, pets. Many people love dogs and would like to draw their pet. By the way, this applies not only to children, but also to adults. If you don't have good artistic skills, try to make an outline of a dog. The drawing is performed in stages: with each step new details are added.

Saint Bernard

We suggest that you first draw the outline of a St. Bernard. This is a very large, but good-natured and cute dog. This breed is used as a rescue dog in mountain ranges where people get caught in snow drifts. If you can draw a St. Bernard, then, following our recommendations, you will be able to draw your pet - a dog of any breed.

We will draw with a simple pencil. It is better to make a picture on the entire sheet of paper, this will make it easier to draw small elements. Below is a description and pictures of the outline of the dog step by step.

  • Draw a diagonal line. In its center we draw a large circle, not necessarily perfectly even. This will be the central part of the dog's body. Below we draw a smaller circle – the back part. Above the large circle, draw the smallest circle. This will be the head of our St. Bernard.
  • Remove the auxiliary diagonal line with an eraser. In the lower part great circle draw a small circle - the joint of the front paw. We draw a line down from it and at the end of it we draw another circle of approximately the same size. To the right of the large circle, draw a line down, parallel to the previous one, and also end with its circle. The sketches of the front paws are ready. Only one hind leg will be visible in a sitting St. Bernard. In order to outline it, draw an oval just below the circle, symbolizing the back of the body.
  • Draw a smaller circle to the circumference of the head. This will be the muzzle. At this stage, it is important to maintain proportions, because this will determine general form dogs.

  • Now we connect all the circles together general outline, drawing lines from the head, through the back, to the paws and ending with the muzzle. If you don’t succeed the first time, it’s okay, inaccurate lines can be erased and started all over again (that’s why it’s important not to make the lines too bold). Don't forget to draw the right eye.
  • Use an eraser to remove it from the picture. auxiliary lines. The outline of the dog is ready, all that remains is to complete the details. Draw the left eye and a round nose just below. From there we draw a stroke down and draw out the contours of the mouth. We connect these elements to form the dog's chin. Well, drawing the ears and tail of a St. Bernard will not be difficult.

Puppy

Drawing the outline of a puppy is more difficult, since there will be no auxiliary elements. But if you try, you can draw the outline of a dog, both large and small, without resorting to auxiliary figures and lines. Here's how it's done.

  • We take a simple pencil and with soft, smooth movements draw the contours of the nose, mouth and eyes. There is no need to press hard on the pencil, because if the outline turns out incorrect, it will be difficult to erase it with an eraser.
  • From the nose we draw arched lines - the muzzle of a spaniel puppy. If necessary, carefully draw the tip of the nose, nostrils, lines of the mouth and eyes.
  • From the nose we draw lines upward, drawing out the sloping forehead and side lines of the head. They smoothly turn into hanging ears. Then we draw the contours of the muzzle - draw two arched lines.

  • From the point of connection of the two curved lines of the muzzle we draw a slightly convex contour downwards. This will be the puppy's chest. On the left side we draw the front paw.
  • Draw in the form of a semicircle hind legs sitting puppy. Since he is sitting sideways, only one paw will be visible. On the other side, from the ear, we begin to draw a slightly rounded outline of the back and tail.

If you want to continue working, you can draw strokes on the body to symbolize disheveled fur, or color the picture as you like.

Craft

It's 2018. According to the eastern calendar, this is the year of the Dog. Therefore, in many kindergartens, schools and creative studios, children make crafts depicting these animals. We suggest making your own original dog out of cardboard. For this you will need:

  • colored cardboard medium density to make it easy to cut out parts;
  • markers;
  • old, unwanted CD;
  • scissors;
  • glue for paper and cardboard.

A dog's kennel for crafts is drawn in the form of separate parts. big size, comparable to the diameter of the disk. Thus, the head, front and hind legs and tail are drawn separately. To make paws, it is better to use a sheet of cardboard folded in half, then the parts will turn out symmetrical.

All elements must be cut out, glued to a CD and colored with felt-tip pens.

Tip: You can also use colored felt instead of cardboard. Then the spots, eyes and nose of the dog will need to be made separately from thick paper and stick on top.

Training video on drawing the outline of a dog from the cartoon " Secret life pets":
