Santa Maria ship Columbus drawing from amati. Sailing modeling

The flagship ship of Christopher Columbus's flotilla. It was a three-masted ship approximately 22-25 meters long, 7-8 meters wide, with a displacement of about 120 tons. This single-deck ship could carry up to 40 crew and passengers. The sailing rig of the Santa Maria consisted of five straight sails and a slanting sail on a mizzen mast. The depth of the hold is about 3 meters. In the aft part there was a two-tier superstructure with cabins for management and storage rooms for everything necessary, on the forecastle there was a triangular platform and possibly another superstructure. The Santa Maria's armament consisted of several different-caliber cannons that fired stone cannonballs. It is known that the Santa Maria crashed on Christmas Day 1492 off the coast of Haiti.

The sailboat model is made by hand from natural wood. The sails are made of canvas with embroidery. A suitable gift for a lover of sea romance and, thanks to its size, it looks great in the interior. An excellent gift for a boss or manager, as a symbol of new discoveries and achievements. This model of the ship is delivered disassembled (you need to install the masts with sails on the ship correctly, according to the instructions), so such a gift will be doubly interesting!

History of the ship SANTA MARIA (Holy Mary)

SANTA MARIA (Holy Mary) is the flagship ship of Christopher Columbus, on which he reached the shores of America in 1492. Such ships were called Nao-type caravels, whose length rarely exceeded 25 m. In particular, Columbus's flagship was exactly 25 m in length with a displacement of 200 tons and was served by a crew of 40 people. Initially, the ship belonged to the famous traveler and cartographer Juan de la Cosa, from whom Columbus rented it. It should be noted that the great navigator did not highly value the ship, considering it not intended for long journeys. Nevertheless, it was he who was the first to reach the American shores and forever write his name in the history of navigation.

The ship was built in Spain, and before the expedition the caravel was used as a merchant ship, sailing between the Iberian Peninsula and Flanders. It was a three-masted ship with straight sails, giving high speed with the proper wind direction. There were lifeboats here, namely a boat and a longboat. The ship was armed with a total of 18 guns of various calibers, as well as many muskets and mortars, which made it possible to repel an attack, and in the conditions of America with its native population it gave undeniable advantages. Two years after the great discovery, the ship sank off the coast of Haiti, and its wreckage was subsequently partially used to build one of the first European settlements on the island.

Description of the kit for building a model ship SANTA MARIA (Holy Mary)

The kit for building one of the most famous ships in world history was developed by specialists from the Amati concern. We are talking about a prefabricated model, the main parts for which, namely the inlaid hull, frames and keel, are cut using a laser, which ensures high clarity of the lines. The body uses double veneer, including linden and walnut, for the inside and outside, respectively. The deck is also decorated using special planks made of light tanganika, which gives it first-class detailing and an attractive appearance of the entire structure as a whole. In addition, there are carved nets, a windlass, and elegant doors typical of ships of the Columbus era.

Along with this, the kit includes deadeyes, a boat, cannons with carriages, as well as pulley blocks and anchors created from seven separate elements. The rigging materials include threads of varying diameters, and the fabric already contains the outline of the sails. On top of that, the set includes Russian-language instructions, supplemented by drawings and photographs with comments and advice from experts, which greatly simplifies assembly and guarantees a successful result in the form of a first-class model, not inferior in terms of quality even to museum exhibits.

THE SET HAS INSTRUCTIONS TRANSLATED INTO RUSSIAN.

It is always a pleasure to demonstrate such products to guests and friends.

Sailboat kits are made of wood and consist of many separate and fully compatible components. They are selected in such a way that, along with the appearance of the ship, they allow you to reliably recreate the atmosphere present on it and convey the features of maritime life. On the website you can buy a variety of prefabricated ship models from manufacturers from different countries (Denmark, USA, Italy, Germany, etc.), who have an impeccable reputation and are market leaders.

Many kits involve recreating exact replicas. Therefore, each ship model kit comes with detailed illustrated explanations and instructions (in Russian). Any missing or additional components can be purchased on the website. But most wooden models of sailing ships do not require this, since they are 100% complete, down to the smallest detail. The price of the sets is determined by the scale of the future sailboat, its complexity, and design features. There are ship models addressed to both beginners and experienced designers.

Review of the Santa Maria model from Mantua

Greetings to all.
Santa Maria is the flagship ship on which Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. It was a three-masted Nao-type carrack no more than 25 meters long and could accommodate up to 40 people. The owner and captain of the carrack was Basque Juan de la Cosa, a famous Spanish traveler and cartographer. Santa Maria was a single-deck, three-masted ship with square rig. She moved slower than Columbus's other ships, but was reliable during storms.
The ship was built in Galicia and named "La Gallega" ("Galician"). The crew called the ship "Marigalante" ("Gallant Mary"). Bartolomé de Las Casas does not use either of these names in his records, calling Columbus's ship "La Capitana" or "La Nao".
Santa Maria crashed on Christmas Day 1492 off the coast of Haiti. The wreck of the ship was used to build a settlement, founded in this place on January 6, 1493. The settlement was named La Navidad (Spanish La Navidad - “Christmas”) after the date of the death of Santa Maria. The modern name of this city is Môle Saint-Nicolas. Not a single image of Columbus's ship has survived. However, in 1892, as part of the celebration of the four hundredth anniversary of Columbus's voyage, a reconstruction of Santa Maria was built.
In the 20th century, many life-size models and floating reconstructions were made, some of the "Nao" type and some designed as caravels. Columbus himself in his journal speaks of Santa Maria as both a carrack and a caravel.

The model itself is packaged in a cardboard box made of fairly thick cardboard, which contains parts for assembling the ship itself.

The hull of the model (keel + frames) is sheathed with slats on the frame. The set contains decorative brass parts made by precision casting using lost wax technology, and plywood parts are laser cut, parts and cladding slats are made of various types of wood: walnut, linden, for masts and spars there are round blanks, photo-etched brass parts, threads for rigging, silk flag, and sails. But in my humble opinion, it is better to make the sails yourself, or buy a set of ready-made sails from the Amati company. I was surprised by the plastic boat, but it also came with a wooden plate with insides.

All small items are packaged in a separate card box and additionally distributed in plastic bags.

Attached are two drawings with spar and rigging, scale 1:1 to the model and step-by-step instructions in the form of a brochure with color illustrations in English, a catalog with the company's models and a catalog to help the modeller with various products of the Mantua company.

The admiral rented the flagship ship of his expedition, Santa Maria, from Juan de la Cosa. Columbus, as a captain, did not have much affection for the ship; he considered it too cumbersome and not suitable for long journeys - it was inferior in speed to the other two caravels. It was built in Spain, on the Galician coast. Before the expedition, the Santa Maria was an ordinary merchant ship and sailed between Spain and Flanders. Its approximate dimensions are 23x6.7x2.8 m, displacement is about 200 tons.

Ship drawing

The set of ship drawings Santa Maria is made in scale 1:65, the length of the model is 540 mm. On drawings 90x70 cm format presents full-scale side views, top views of the deck, and longitudinal section. There are several isometric views. On the second sheet of drawings You will find patterns for all frame parts, drawings of the spar, attachment points for the ends of the rigging, a list of necessary parts and methods for fixing deadeyes and sails. To that set of ship drawings Attached is a step-by-step assembly instruction on 8 pages, which shows all the stages of manufacturing the Santa Maria ship model: from installing frames to attaching gear. Instructions in English. The main materials required to build a model of this ship: plywood 4 and 1 mm thick; linden and pear slats 1x4 mm, walnut 0.5x4 mm; light threads 0.5 and 1 mm.
