Mathematics is the queen of losses
As a rule, during combat operations the parties do not report accurate information about their losses so as not to reveal the operational situation to the enemy. Discrepancies are possible in the assessments of international organizations and experts. And yet, the losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Donbass are mathematically transparent.
The report of the military-analytical agency International Institute for Strategic Studies Military Balance for 2016 - in comparison with a similar report for 2013 - makes it possible to accurately assess the irretrievable losses of personnel and ground equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the active phase of the ATO.
Over three years, the number of Ukrainian tanks decreased from 1,435 to 788, that is, 647 tanks burned down. Of the 3,000 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), 1,300 units remained, that is, 1,700 infantry fighting vehicles were destroyed. Of the 3,350 units of cannon and rocket artillery, 1,850 units remained, that is, 1,500 artillery installations were lost. But on the battlefield, tanks and infantry fighting vehicles burn, as a rule, with their crews and airborne squads.
There is no more shameful title than “ATO veteran”
The crew of the T-72 is three people. The BMP-1 can accommodate eight paratroopers (the regular crew is three people). The crew of the BM-21 "Grad" is three people. Even without touching on the losses of personnel outside of armored vehicles, we can assume that few crews survived from 647 burned tanks (1941 people), not all crews and paratroopers escaped from 1,700 destroyed infantry fighting vehicles (18,700 people), and the crews of 1,500 destroyed artillery units on the field The battle was protected at best by body armor (4,500 people).
It turns out that the losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, based only on tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and artillery, amount to over 25 thousand killed and wounded. I believe that against the background of this figure we can confidently talk about thousands of military personnel who died in the trenches. Thus, the probable losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces over the three years of the punitive operation in Donbass are about 30 thousand people (German intelligence also took into account civilian casualties, so I will not deny the death of 50 thousand Ukrainians).
The figure of 30 thousand correlates with the first three (out of seven) mobilizations in Ukraine (more than 30 thousand people were called up), after which there was no demobilization. No new military units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been created, and the strength of the National Guard is only about five thousand people.
Over three years, Ukraine sold 23 tanks and 28 armored personnel carriers on the international market, which does not affect the overall picture of combat losses.
Destruction of dignity
There are also more systematic data on the Internet about the losses of Ukrainian security forces and Western European and American citizens who sympathize with them (with weapons in their hands). For obvious reasons, it is very difficult to verify information about the deaths of, for example, 88 employees of the CIA, FBI, special forces of the US Department of Defense, 737 foreign mercenaries from private military companies ASBS Othago (Poland), Asademi and Greystone Limited (USA) and other foreigners.
The civil war has continued for more than a thousand days and nights, which has become a natural continuation of the “revolution of dignity”, the “color” project of the USA and the EU. During this time, the Ukrainian Armed Forces carried out dozens of offensive (punitive) operations, trying to capture individual settlements on the territory of the DPR and LPR. Almost all of them ended in failure.
The Kiev leadership and the “children of the Maidan” did not draw the right conclusions. The Minsk agreements are not being implemented. The ATO zone and the operation itself have become a profitable business for individual Ukrainian politicians (military contracts, smuggling of goods and services). From time to time, conflicts and even bloody shootouts arise between security forces and radicals in Ukraine. The economic decline in the country is masked by anti-Russian rhetoric. There are about 200 thousand military personnel in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and most of them participate in the ATO.
The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation is investigating 104 criminal cases involving crimes in eastern Ukraine. The defendants are Ukrainian politicians, deputies of the Verkhovna Rada, the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the chairman of the SBU.
Meanwhile, over 100 thousand Ukrainians received Russian citizenship in 2016. This is 49% more than in 2015 (67,400 people). At this rate, in 30-40 years of the ATO, the whole of Ukraine may return to Russia.
Few people seem to have paid attention to the recently published 18th special report of the UN Human Rights Office on Ukraine. Especially regarding the situation in the combat zone in Donbass. And in my opinion, it’s worth paying attention. Because this important document contains new evidence of Kyiv’s systematic and deliberate lies about the losses of its own army during the so-called “ATO”.
However, first let us remember that quite recently, in April of this year, in Washington President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko publicly estimated the number of soldiers and officers of his Armed Forces killed in Donbass at 2.7 thousand people. And so that, apparently, this still made an impression on the indifferent American audience, Pyotr Alekseevich added that in three years his troops lost more in the conflict zone than the US Army lost in 15 years of participation in the war in Afghanistan.
Now let’s turn to the aforementioned report, which came out of the bowels of the UN headquarters. In total, according to international experts, during the fighting in the south-east of Ukraine, which has not stopped with varying intensity for the fourth year (data are given for the period from mid-April 2014 to May 15, 2017), “34,056 civilian casualties were recorded.” population, the Armed Forces of Ukraine and members of armed groups.”
What do you get according to UN statistics if you perform basic arithmetic operations? That by May 15, 2017, 7,313 Ukrainian military personnel were killed in Donbass (this number, obviously, includes fighters of the so-called “dobrobats”, who, strictly speaking, were not counted in the army in 2014-2015).
There simply cannot be any talk about any other military personnel in the document. After all, if international experts also included “members of armed groups” from the Donbass defenders (that is, militias and volunteers opposing the Ukrainian Armed Forces) as military personnel, then they would have to admit that two armies are fighting each other in the conflict zone. And since two armies are fighting, it means that at least two states are at war. Which would be tantamount to actual recognition of the LPR and DPR at the UN level.
Since it is impossible to imagine this today, we can only take this fact for granted: according to UN estimates, by May 15 of this year, the Armed Forces of Ukraine lost at least 7,313 soldiers and officers during the ATO. This is approximately three times more than Poroshenko counted in Washington.
And who are the dead militias and volunteers from the point of view of Kyiv and the UN, which tenderly takes its opinion into account? Terrorists, militants, rebels, rebels. At worst - “separatists”. That is, completely civilian characters who suddenly took up arms for some reason and entered into an endless battle with the official authorities. They, too, of course, regularly die in the Donbass steppes and copses. But these losses are, of course, taken into account by UN experts in the “civilian population” column. Along with completely peaceful residents of cities and villages of the Southeast.
To someone in Kyiv will this seem like casuistic “propaganda from Moscow” and distortion of facts? So we will not insist on the finality of this particular figure for Ukrainian losses, which directly follows from the UN report. Because the UN itself is probably also aware of its approximate nature. Of course, their statistics are purely estimates. And no one has another, more accurate one in the public domain. But from Kyiv there is a flood of untruths pouring out about this matter. And the UN, too, is undoubtedly aware of this.
Thus, in the 13th special report of the UN Human Rights Office for the fall of 2014, it is written in black and white: “The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine and WHO believe that the data on the number of deaths of Ukrainian military, civilians and members of armed groups was underestimated by throughout the entire period of the anti-terrorist operation. The government's level of underreporting of military casualties can be seen by comparing the number of casualties provided by the National Security and Defense Council (3,277) with the number of military personnel treated in the main military and civilian medical institutions located in the regions closest to the fighting - Dnepropetrovsk, Kharkov and Zaporozhye. Their number was at least 4,800 people.”
Moreover, the data on losses in Kiev are falsified so clumsily and shamelessly that one is amazed. At the highest level they lie and don’t blush. Judge for yourself.
Thus, in March 2016, during a visit to the United States, Poroshenko said that more than 2.7 thousand Ukrainian military personnel had died from the fire of certain “united Russian-terrorist forces” during the entire conflict.
Let’s not even try to understand why today, a year after that speech and again in the same USA, the President of Ukraine for some reason repeats exactly the same data. What, none of the Ukrainian soldiers died in Donbass in a year? Yes, only last May data of the Ukrainian Committee of Soldiers' Mothers, 20 soldiers and officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine fell in the “ATO zone”. A list of their names is also published there.
But something else is even more surprising. Already in August 2016 (five months after his trip to the United States), Poroshenko, speaking at a military parade on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence in Kyiv, said: “We can confidently say that the enemy failed to implement a single strategic task, he did not was able to bring Ukraine to its knees. For this, 2,504 of our soldiers died.”
So how many fallen “heroes” did you have by that time, Pyotr Alekseevich? 2.7 thousand like in March? Or two hundred fewer people, like in August 2016?
Completely confused everything Chief of the General Staff of Ukraine Viktor Muzhenko. Another six months later, in February 2017, he blurted out from a high podium: “The combat losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine... amounted to 2,197 people killed and about 8 thousand wounded.”
However, another five days passed. And the Ukrainian president, at a meeting of the leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, left no stone unturned in Muzhenko’s calculations: “2,608 Ukrainian servicemen died during the aggression.”
In short, it’s not just UN experts who can’t figure it out without vodka. But those who, despite the facts, still believe Poroshenko, should at least listen to their own veterans who recently returned from the “ATO zone.” And the true state of affairs with the irretrievable losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is familiar not only from newspapers.
Just recently, on June 19, a crowd of these angry individuals in camouflage, led by a certain Bronislav Sukhiya, leader of the Revolutionary Right Forces(this organization includes several former Right Sector battalions *), in the very center of the Ukrainian capital, they broke into the reception room of the presidential administration and paralyzed the work of an important institution for a long time. Veterans demanded the release of their comrade Yuri Zabolotny, who was detained by the SBU on suspicion of preparing to overthrow the government. Among other slogans of the rioters were the following: “We demand an honest report to society about the real losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and volunteer battalions in the ATO and to punish those responsible for these losses and the lies that the authorities are silent about the self-sacrifice of thousands of our soldiers. Impeachment of Poroshenko!
What does it mean? In my opinion, there is only one option: if militant Ukrainian nationalists in this context claim that Kyiv is maliciously keeping silent about the “self-sacrifice of thousands of our soldiers,” then it turns out that the true level of losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is precisely these “thousands” of killed.
Many have tried to establish the true number of “200 cargoes” that have been regularly transported from Donbass to all cities and towns of Ukraine for four years now. Including in the seemingly impartial West. The numbers that were often produced were astonishing.
Like, for example, the German publication Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung. Back in February 2015, it published the following opinion: “German intelligence services estimate the likely number of dead Ukrainian military personnel and civilians to be up to 50 thousand people. These figures are ten times more than the stated official data. The official figures are clearly too low and not trustworthy.”
At the same time, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung does not say a word about what such stunning assessments of German intelligence are based on. But the mechanism of its own calculations was revealed by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies Military Balance, which also addressed this tragic topic.
So, in London they calculated that by 2017 (that is, over three years of conflict) the number of tanks in the Ukrainian army decreased from 1,435 to 788 units. Of the 3,000 infantry fighting vehicles, no more than 1,300 remained in service. Of the 3,350 units of cannon and rocket artillery, only 1,850 survived.
It is clear that most of these armored fighting vehicles simply burned down in the Donbass. But tanks, armored personnel carriers, infantry fighting vehicles and self-propelled guns most often perish along with their crews and troops, if any were under their armor. With modern means of destruction, few survive.
The BMP-1 carries up to eight infantrymen plus three crew members. It turns out that even if we assume that none of the 1,700 destroyed Ukrainian infantry fighting vehicles carried troops, and only crews were in them, then even then, with a high degree of probability, at least 5,100 military personnel were killed or wounded in them. With paratroopers in the fighting compartment, this number increases by approximately 3-3.5 times. So consider...
Summarizing only these data, the International Institute for Strategic Studies Military Balance concluded that in 2014–2016 alone, the losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Donbass amounted to approximately 25 thousand soldiers and officers. And this does not count those who were covered by shells and mines in trenches, dugouts, concentration points, and in attacks on foot. And in a positional war these are always the majority.
Who to believe? Poroshenko, who is constantly confused in his testimony, but insists on 2.7 thousand fallen? General Muzhenko, who counted half a thousand fewer of them? Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung with its 50,000 perished in this war? Analysts from London?
In any case, only one thing is known for sure: there is a senseless and non-stop massacre going on in the Donbass. Politicians seek to use its intermediate results for their own selfish interests. Because those who insist are a thousand times right: in any war, the first victim is always the truth.
But in conclusion, I offer one more look at this tragedy. This time from a Ukrainian military hospital. This is what Vladimir Steblyuk, deputy head of the Military Medical Academy for clinical work, colonel of the medical service of Ukraine, told local journalists in April: “They (Ukrainian soldiers and officers - “SP”) are sitting in the trenches. And the trenches have long been targeted. So much so that the hit rate is 100 percent. If you didn’t hide deep somewhere there, that’s it, you died under fire. This is not a war. This murder is coming. This is an execution."
