The first season of the series "Lost" ( original name“Lost”, that is, literally “lost”) was released back in 2004 and attracted about 16 million people on television in the USA alone. Filming of the series ended in 2010; a total of six seasons were released. In the Russian segment, the series was broadcast on TV-3, AXN Sci-Fi and had pretty good ratings. “Lost” was promoted using marketing technologies unprecedented at that time both in Russia and in the world. The creators of the series invested enormous amounts of money into maintaining the popularity of the film:

During the existence of the site (about nine weeks), over 147 thousand people registered on it.
In addition, comics, books, and games were released based on the film. Thus, there is not only a large-scale media product (and the series really turned out to be brilliant in terms of character development, non-linearity, sharpness and thoughtfulness of the plot), but also a competent advertising company that turned “Lost” into a real flagship of serial cinema. Therefore, it is very interesting to look at this creation from the point of view, in the light of which its content will be considered. It is important to note that the series was broadcast on Channel One in prime time, that is, it was available for viewing by both adults and children.
About the plot
The plot is based on the crash of Oceanic Airlines Flight 815, en route from Sydney (Australia) to Los Angeles (USA). The plane crashes as a result of an explosion on board. Some of the passengers find themselves on the shores of an unknown island, where they have to learn to survive in the jungle and solve many mysteries of this mysterious piece of land.
The series is structured in such a way that the main plot is often interrupted by so-called flashbacks (flashes of the past), from which we learn about past life heroes, about their life before the island. And it is this life that is most revealing.
Let's now look at the characters of the series and what kind of family image they carry... All this information was gradually revealed to the viewer over the course of 6 seasons.
Jack Shepard
In life before the island, Jack Shepard is a doctor, a spinal surgeon. Initially, he worked with his father at the St. Sebastian Clinic, his father was the chief physician there. Jack's father, Christian Shepard, despite all his career achievements, had addiction to alcohol, for which Jack despised him. The series does not say anything about the cohabitation of Christian Shepard and Jack's mother Margot Shepherd. After the father, being drunk, allows medical error– accidentally cuts the patient’s hepatic artery, as a result of which she dies – Christian Shepard is deprived of his medical license because he operated on drunk. It is noteworthy that his son Jack reports this fact to the medical commission.
Christian leaves for Australia after the incident. Mother persuades Jack to go and find his father there, but Jack doesn’t really want to go, he still despises his father and cannot forgive him for his mistakes. As we can see, the relationship between Jack and his father is very bad. In the end, Christian dies from heart attack caused by drunkenness.
Now let's turn our attention to personal life Jack. He is treating a patient named Sarah. Sarah injured her spine and is now bedridden; there is no certainty that she will be able to walk again. But Jack spends days and nights in the hospital, monitoring Sarah’s condition, thinking about how to help her. As a result, he manages to accomplish the impossible, and Sarah recovers. Between her and Jack it is established mutual sympathy which over time develops into love. Jack and Sarah get married.
But what then happens to their marriage?! Jack constantly disappears at work, trying to save another seriously ill patient named Angelo. Meanwhile, the patient's daughter, Gabriela, begins to show signs of sympathy for Jack, at one opportune moment she kisses him. At home, Jack breathes a sigh of relief when Sarah reports a negative pregnancy test. Jack and Sarah gradually begin to move away from each other. When Jack reveals that Gabriela kissed him, Sarah reveals that she has someone else. They end up getting divorced.
Kate Austin
Kate was married to Kevin Killis, to whom she told the truth about herself and then slipped sleeping pills into his tea in order to escape and thus keep him out of trouble.
Kate killed her biological father Wayne by putting him to bed drunk and turning on the gas in the house. Wayne died in the fire. Thus, she took revenge on him for constantly beating Diana, Kate’s mother, and causing drunken brawls and scandals. However, Diana cannot forgive her daughter, and she herself testified against her, reporting Wayne's death to the police. During a personal meeting with Kate after the crime, Diana said that she still loved Wayne, despite the fact that he treated her like that.
On the island, Kate also behaves a little strangely: she is torn between two men, Jack and Sawyer, who are both dear to her. At the same time, she sleeps with one and loves the other.
John Locke
John's mother was fifteen years old when she gave birth to him and immediately abandoned him. John grew up in a foster family. One day, as an adult, he accidentally meets his mother, decides to follow her and eventually finds his father, Anthony Cooper.
John meets his father. His father treats him kindly, takes him hunting, they spend a lot of time together - this is what John missed so much. But soon, when John has already become attached to Anthony, he reports that he will soon die. He needs a kidney transplant to live. Since John is Anthony's son, he is the ideal donor for his father. John decides to give his father a kidney. But then it turns out that his father is a professional swindler, and specifically sent his mother to John, he hoped that Locke would start looking for something and, as if by chance, would contact his father. In other words, the father wanted to scam his own son out of a kidney for free.
After the operation, Anthony disappears. Then their lives intersect again, and it turns out that the father is trying to seduce one rich lady, again for the purpose of profit. Anthony commits a crime: he kills this lady's son. Locke finds out about this and comes to his father to stop him, threatening that he will tell the police everything. A father pushes his son out of a multi-story hotel window, and he ends up in a wheelchair with completely paralyzed legs.
Sawyer
Real name: James Ford. His mother Mary Ford began an affair with a man named Sawyer. This man turned out to be a swindler who fraudulently took over all the savings of the Ford family. The enraged father, having learned about this, came home and began banging on the door. James hid under the bed. The enraged father first shot Mary and then himself. After these tragic events the boy writes a letter to this scammer. He wants to give this letter to the scammer personally. Having matured, he himself becomes the same swindler and takes the same name for himself - Sawyer. As a result of his criminal activities, Sawyer ends up in prison, and his partner in scams and lover gives birth to a daughter.
Claire Littleton
Claire grew up without a father. At first, when Claire was born, her father visited her periodically, then disappeared. Claire herself believed that he was dead.
At the age of twenty-two, Claire became involved with an artist named Thomas. They began to live together. Claire got pregnant. At first, Thomas was excited about becoming a father. Then, as events progressed and the deadline approached, seeing children’s things, a cradle, and toys appear in the house, Thomas became more and more nervous and gloomy. Ultimately, he told Claire that he was not ready for fatherhood, blamed her for getting pregnant, and left, slamming the door, leaving his beloved and his unborn child to the mercy of fate.
Claire decided to give the child away after birth. While signing the necessary papers, there was a hitch: the pen stopped writing. Claire considered this a “sign from above” and did not give up her child. But then the psychic she was visiting offered her a family where her child would be happy, giving her plane tickets. It was flight 815 that ended in a plane crash.
Jin Kwon and Sun Kwon
Husband and wife. Sun Kwon is the daughter of a South Korean tycoon. Jin Kwon is the son of a fisherman who was also supposed to become a fisherman. But Jin marries Sun and her father offers him a job. The job turns out to be not so clean, and Sun’s father is a real mafioso. There is not a single person in the series whose family is normal.
This applies to both the characters on Flight 815 and the characters living on the island. Moreover, often the conflict between fathers and children leads to real reprisals and murders. I would like to repeat myself and emphasize once again that the series was broadcast on Channel One in prime time, that is, it was available for viewing by children and teenagers. What image of family will they take away from the Lost series, other than the fact that family is evil?!
The situation is aggravated by another plot twist: all the girls who are going to give birth to a child on the island die after giving birth. And only some experimental vaccine, which is being developed by Dr. Juliet Burke, can save the life of a woman in labor. But the probability is extremely low. Only Claire manages to survive, but her child was not conceived on the island. Because of this, Ben separates his daughter from her boyfriend, the guy is brainwashed by showing special videos in a closed hangar and pumping him with psychotropic substances. And Ben’s mother herself, as mentioned earlier, dies as a result of childbirth.
This moment very eloquently complements the anti-family message of the film. How will the demonstration of numerous episodes with the death of women in labor affect the psyche of a young girl who saw it on TV in popular TV series? Perhaps she will let this pass by and not pay attention, but perhaps the subconscious fear of death during childbirth will become so ingrained in her brain that the girl, having matured, will begin to experience discomfort at the thought of motherhood, regarding pregnancy as something undesirable or even dangerous.
Of course, someone will say that all this takes place somewhere in the background, and the central story line dedicated to other events. But the fact of the matter is that this anti-family message is not mandatory and could be of the opposite nature. But instead, the film has no alternative and bright colors forms negative image family as something dangerous and bringing only misfortune.
