Guitarist slash and his guitars. The inimitable Slash: when they draw cartoon characters from you Slash and his solo projects, world recognition and other interesting details

Sunglasses, a smoking cigarette, a top hat and a bandana in the back pocket of his tight pants... When listing all these attributes, only one person came to mind - Slash, who received this nickname because in his youth he could never sit on one place and was constantly running around somewhere. This virtuoso guitarist and songwriter is best known around the world as the guitarist for the American band Guns N' Roses, with whom he achieved worldwide success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. And today, in honor of his birthday, you will find a short article about his successes in the musical field.

First guitar, introduction to rock music and Guns N’ Roses

Saul Hudson (this is the musician's real name) was born on July 23, 1965 in a place called Hampstead, which is the most expensive area of London. Both of his parents worked in the music industry: his mother was a stage costume designer for David Bowie, and his father designed record covers for musicians such as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell.

At the age of six, after a break in relations between his parents, Sol, together with his mother, moved to the USA, where he would soon become a world-famous musician. The starting point of his musical “addiction” was a gift for his fifteenth birthday: he received nothing more than a guitar. Although it is stated that it was the simplest acoustics, and even with only one string, this did not discourage our hero from making music. He was also greatly influenced by a music teacher at a local school, who often picked up a guitar and played hits by bands such as Cream and Led Zeppelin, which also played a role.

Together with his school friend Steven Adler, who later also became famous as a member of Guns N' Roses, he assembled the Road Crew, which played covers of many hits of those years. A little later, he ended up at the Hollywood Rose, where he met those people who would later create the legendary “Hans”. It was this group that discovered this talented musician to the whole world; with his participation, the first 5 studio albums of Guns N’ Roses were recorded, hits from which to this day form the backbone of this group’s performances. But over time, tension within the group increased so much that in 1993 Slash left the team, having had a strong fight with the vocalist of the “Gans” Axl Rose. Only in 2015 did they reconcile, and a little later came the long-awaited reunion of the “golden” composition of this team.

Slash and his solo projects, world recognition and other interesting details

Happy father of two children

After leaving Guns N' Roses, a man like Slash naturally did not remain unnoticed and did not sit idly by. In 1993, he created a band called Slash’s Snakepit, then the blues cover band Slash’s Blues Ball and the most interesting project (for fans of the old “Hans”) – Velvet Revolver. But his solo work, which is designated as Slash, should not be ignored, since the recordings of his albums include such stars as Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy Kilmister, Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper and many others. (By the way, you can read about Slash’s last performance in Moscow).

Slash received critical acclaim around the world and is today considered one of the best guitarists of all time. This is confirmed by repeated awards and inclusion in various authoritative lists of the best guitarists. In 2007, the musician received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In the game Guitar Hero

He also became famous as a person with a rich vocabulary of obscene expressions, since in 1990 he amazed seasoned American television directors with selective obscenities to such an extent that they had to interrupt the live broadcast. One of the heads of the television company said in panic: “This hasn’t happened on our screen for 17 years! From this day on, we will broadcast all such shows with a seven-second delay so that, if necessary, we have time to avoid broadcasting things that could offend our viewers.”

Thanks to his talents, his prototypes can be found in various video games or cartoons. For example, in the famous animated series “The Simpsons”, the hero Otto Mann, who, although not the main character of the cartoon, was written off from his image, is a fairly common character.

On stage with Ozzy Osbourne

Twenty years ago, Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash was the brightest character on the world rock scene. But even over the past 15 years after the collapse of the classic line-up of the group, his image of a giant poodle in a top hat has not faded at all. Slash remains a symbol of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle - a lover of destroying hotel rooms and public swearing. On Saturday morning, December 2, 2000, Slash was filming a live broadcast of the children's music show CD:UK on British TV. First, an inebriated Slash delighted the young audience with a story about how a certain porn star tried to have sex with him through oral sex in a bar in front of an MTV film crew. When the fingers of the broadcast directors began to go numb from constantly pressing the jamming button, Slash gave five million English children another surprise - the story of how one of his pet iguanas “bit the fuck off” a piece of his hand . At this point, the interview was interrupted, and Slash was escorted out of the studio. “Yes, I said fuck,” the rocker explained in an interview given three days later, “but they forced me to do it.” “I usually drink until I pass out, then I don’t remember anything and probably give the impression of a complete freak,” the musician admits. We wouldn't say that: when Slash was rocking out on stage at a Moscow club in the summer of 2010, he looked handsome.

Genius against use

1986 Guns N' Roses sign with record giant Geffen. Slash goes to Hawaii to gain strength after drinking alcohol in Phoenix. “I then trashed the hotel room, ran down the hallway naked and everything.”

1988 The album Appetite for Destruction tops the American album chart. After drinking, Slash takes a friend's car and drives home. “I definitely parked it, but I couldn’t remember where,” he says.

1991 The albums Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II are released and break sales records. The group breaks alcohol records.

1992 The single November Rain, for which Slash recorded 118 guitar solos, debuts at number four on the chart. The US Department of Health criticizes Slash for participating in an advertisement for Black Death vodka.

1996–2000 Slash leaves Guns N' Roses, focusing all his attention on his own band, Slash's Snakepit. “I still get drunk often, and it doesn’t bother me at all,” the musician admits.

2001–2007 Slash breaks down and is hospitalized with cardiomyopathy and a prognosis of “six days to live.” The musician extricates himself from the other world with the help of a defibrillator and begins a career as a guitarist in the supergroup Velvet Revolver, with which he releases two excellent albums.

2008–2010 After the collapse of Velvet Revolver, he gathers an army of vocalists led by Ozzy and releases the super solo album Slash, with which he reaches Moscow. Doesn't drink for health reasons.

2012 Recorded the powerful album Apocalyptic Love.

2013 Goes on a world tour, this time covering St. Petersburg in addition to Moscow. Gives an interview to MAXIM Online. Life is good.

Drinking buddies

Nikki Sixx

During their joint drinking session in December 1987, the Mötley Crüe bassist drank himself to clinical death. Resurrected with the help of Slash.

Michael "Duff" McKagan

After years of alcoholic partnership, the Guns N' Roses bassist is more aware of Slash's unique abilities than anyone else.

Saul Hudson, better known as Slash, was born in 1965 in Hampstead, the son of a white English man and a black American woman, who both worked in show business. Contrary to popular belief, his father was not Jewish. His mother was a stage costume designer for David Bowie, and his father designed record covers for musicians such as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. At the age of 6 he moved with his mother to the USA, his father remained in England. In mid-1970, he attended Beverly Hills High School and was raised by his grandmother, since his parents were divorced and his mother was far from caring for Sol.

At the age of 15, his grandmother gave him his first acoustic guitar, which had only one string. Soon, together with Steven Adler, he founded the first group “The Road Crew”. Then Slash met Axl Rose. Slash (lead guitar), Duff McKagan (bass), Izzy Stradlin (rhythm guitar), Axl Rose (vocals) and Steven Adler (drums) formed “Guns n" Roses.” Slash became one of the leaders of the group. In 1987, the album “ Appetite for Destruction” rises to the top of many charts. Two other albums of 1991, “Use Your Illusion” I and II, also had great success. But in 1996, Slash and Axl Rose had a final breakup, and he left. "Guns N" Roses. In 1994, Slash created the group Slash's Snakepit. In 1995, the group released the album It's Five O'Clock Somewhere. After a break, during which Slash founded the blues cover band Slash's Blues Ball (1996 -1998), in 2000, Slash's Snakepit released Ain't Life Grand. Only Slash remained from the old lineup in Snakepit.

In 2002, Slash, with two former colleagues from Guns N' Roses - Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, founded the group Velvet Revolver. The vocalist was Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots. The group releases quite successful albums and conducts concert tours. Slash also repeatedly performed with Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Michael Jackson, Zach Wylde.

In 2010, Slash released a solo album. Participating in the recording were: Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy, Dave Grohl, Kid Rock, M. Shadows, Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper and many others.

For a long time, he had the following stage image: a top hat, long black curly hair and glasses, a cigarette in his mouth, tight leather pants, and a blue bandana in the back right pocket of his pants. He plays primarily Gibson Les Paul guitars and is a big collector of these guitars - the oldest of which is from 1959. There are about 10 personalized ones made by Gibson exclusively for him.

In 2012, Slash received the honorary Kerrang Icon Award from the British publication of the same name.

On May 22, 2012, Slash released his second solo album, Apocalyptic Love, in collaboration with Myles Kennedy (co-songwriter), Todd Kerns and Brent Fitz.

Anglo-American guitarist, former member of Guns-n-Roses and now Velvet Revolver...
With his invariable hat and a cigarette in his mouth, this musician is rightfully considered one of the best guitarists of our time.
Slash was born in 1965 in the suburbs of London, his father was English, his mother was from Nigeria, and both worked in show business.
His mother was a costume designer for David Bowie, his father was an artist who worked with Neil Young and Jonny Mitchell.
Slash lived in Stoke-On-Trent until he was 11 years old, and then his mother and son moved to the USA, California, somewhere in the mid-70s, where his grandmother raised him. And the nickname Slash was given to him by a family friend, Seymour Cassel/
At the age of 14, Slash received his first guitar as a gift from his grandmother. And this, like many future rock musicians, had the same effect.
The guy devoted all his time to playing the guitar, which affected his visits to school and his academic performance. In the end, he decided to leave school. Here's what Slash says about that time:
“My awakening happened when I was 14 years old, I wanted a relationship with one girl, we were cooking something in the kitchen and then Aerosmith started playing, I completely lost myself in the music, listened again and again, the girl was forgotten .. I was driving back to the bicycle, to my grandmother, and then I realized that my life had changed.."

In addition to Aerosmith, Slash's influences include AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Iron Maiden, Rory Gallagher, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy, Van Halen and Frank Zappa.
To improve his skills, Slash performed on various rock stages. Since childhood, the guy was familiar with Stephen Alder and the Road Crew. At that time, the group had problems with the turnover of members, and when they needed a bassist, Slash was invited by Duff McKagan ( Duff McKagan). When the Road Crew found a guitarist, Slash joined the band Black Sheep, led by Willie Bass.
In 1984, the Christian-metal band Stryper was created from two bands - Black Sheep and Hollywood Rose. After the show, Slash and leader Axl Rose were introduced to each other, which led to friendship, and a few months later the two friends were offered to perform in the updated line-up Gans-n-Roses, also featured Duff McKagan and Izzy Stradlin

Young and reckless Guns-n-Roses first performed in bars, in small venues, and entered the big stage in 1985/1986. And it was this period that was the most fruitful, when most of their classic material was recorded, including Welcome To The Jungle, Sweet Child o`Mine, Paradise Sity.. The group performed at that time harder and more aggressive rock, the music became interested in it. companies with which the team entered into lucrative contracts. The group created its own original image (clothing and performance style), and of course, there was no alcohol and drugs, as a result of which the gang was nicknamed “The Most Dangerous Band of the World”
In the summer of 19897, Appetite for Destruction was released and the hype around the group reached enormous proportions. A tour with Iron Maiden was cancelled, Slash's involvement with drugs, Axel ends up in the hospital after attacking a police officer, a shocking encounter with a robot rapist, and eventually interest in the band went into overdrive. But it is music that saves the gang's reputation.

1988 - Guns-n-Roses release a No. 1 hit with the song "Sweet Child o" Mine", which features Slash's legendary solo; this song topped all the world's charts for a long time. It was then that Slash took his place as one of the best guitarists of all time.
To this day, many of Slash's riffs and solos appear on Best of lists.
In 1988, G N' Lies was also released,

This EP with the catchy acoustic song Patience had only 8 tracks, 4 of which had already been released previously, but this release turned out to be very successful and sold 5 million copies.
Then 4 years of time out and the group returned again, this time with the epic Use Your Illusion. The album showed changes in music. In the band's sound, the compositions became more artistic and dramatic, for example, such as "November Rain" and "Estranged".
Songs in this vein, along with ballads like "Don"t Cry" led to a new tear-jerking direction of rock... which successfully developed a few years later...
At the same time, Slash fought to maintain the band's traditional sound, like punk blazes based on hard rock.
Dalle albums Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II. In 1991, the group conducted a 28-month tour in support of these albums.
After the release of the album "The Spaghetti Incident?" Slash decided to leave the band due to creative differences. Guns-n-Roses rejected a bunch of material Slash had written, forcing the musician to create a side project in which Slash was assisted by Matt Sorum, Gilby Clarke, Dizzy Reed, Mike Inez, and Eric Dover. This is Slash's Snakepit.

In 1995, the album It's Five O'Clock was released, which received very high praise and sold over 1.2 million copies in the USA alone.
In 1996, Axel and Slash's paths completely diverged.
After leaving Guns-n-Roses, Slash focused on his Snakepit project, touring several times before its disbandment in 1998.
Over the next decade, Slash worked as a session guitarist for such rock monsters as Alice Cooper, Sammy Hagar, Insane Clown Posse, Ronnie Wood, Bad Company, Cheap Trick, as well as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, and Rod Stewart.
In 2001, having revived Snakepit, Slash released his second solo album, Ain't Life Grand, which reached platinum status. In support of this album, he makes a world tour..
Here's an interesting fact from the biography... Once in 1990, Slash collaborated with Michael Jackson. It is worth remembering these hits - Black or White and Give in to Me, later Slash also appeared in Michael's video in 1995 (Give in to Me ). Slash was on stage with Jackson at the MTV awards.
In 1995, Quentin Tarantino asked Slash to contribute to his score for Jackie Brown. Several Snakepit compositions can be heard at the beginning of the film.

In March 1996, Slash collaborated with Marta Sanchez, recording the flamenco "Obsession-Confession" for the Curdled soundtrack. The song was played on all major jazz radio stations. Later that year, Slash played with Alice Cooper at Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo club. in Mexico. The show was recorded and released the following year as A Fistful of Alice.
In 1997, Slash remixed his single Fix.
In 2003, he participated in the Yardbirds' comeback record Birdland, playing as lead guitarist on the track "Over, Under, Sideways, Down."
In early 2003, Slash appears at the "Peace on the Beach" rally to protest the Iraq War. In particular, Slash performs John Lennon's song Imagine, with Ed Kowalczyk on vocals.
Well, in 2002, Slash reunited with Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum for a concert in honor of Randy Castillo. Then the friends decide to create a new formation, Keith Nelson and Josh Todd join them
And after some time, Dave Kushner joins the group as a rhythm guitarist, then a long search for a vocalist begins. Having almost lost all hope, Slash decided to give up, but... Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots offers his strength to the group.
This is how the Velvet Revolver group was created /// but that's another story...
