Tsaritsyno Museum schedule. State Museum-Reserve Tsaritsyno

State Museum-Reserve Tsaritsino. Atrium of the Bread House - concert poster 2020

The Bread House (“Kitchen Building”) is one of the most massive buildings in Tsaritsyno. The two-story building on a high base has the shape of a square with rounded corners. The decoration of the walls is very restrained. Against this background, white stone images of a loaf of bread and a salt shaker stand out. They later gave a second name to the Kitchen Building - Bread House.

The area of the Bread House is huge - more than 4000 square meters. Often visitors to Tsaritsyno are surprised why such a large kitchen building was needed, and what was housed in it? In the ground floor of the Bread House it was planned to place cellars and glaciers, and in the two upper floors - three kitchens, pastry shops, rooms for other needs, as well as living rooms for servants.

Construction of the Bread House began only in the summer of 1784, at a time when almost all the main buildings of the Tsaritsyn residence of the Empress had already been erected. A year later, by the summer of 1785, the bread house was erected. True, they did not have time to cover it with a roof and make a parapet. In the fall of 1786, the Kitchen building was covered with a temporary bast “lid” and only in 1787-1788 with a permanent iron one.

What was not located in the Bread House in the 19th-20th centuries: a hospital and an almshouse (in 1852-1859), a zemstvo school, and after the revolution of 1917, communal apartments were located in the Bread House, which existed until the 1970s!
