The musical theater is the pride of the city of Ivanovo. It has a rich history. Today the theater's repertoire is extensive and varied. Talented artists perform here, among whom there are laureates and diploma winners of the highest theater award in our country, the Golden Mask.

History of the theater

Exists since 1930. At first it was a group that toured the Ivanovo region. In September 1931, a reorganization took place. The group turned into a traveling Ivanovo-Voznesensk musical comedy theater. But the troupe did not have its own building for several years. In 1934, the regional executive committee and presidium united the traveling group with the Regional Drama Theater, and this is how the Regional Musical Comedy Theater appeared. In 1935 he got his own building.

The first permanent performance of the theater was “Harry Domela”, the author of the music for which was A. Ashkenazi, and the librettist and director was V. Lensky, who was also the first artistic director. In 1936, the composition of the troupe changed significantly; young but already experienced operetta artists came to the theater: M. Matveev, E. May, Z.D. Gabrilyants, K. Konstan, N. Skalov and others. In the same year, the premiere of the production of “The Serf” by N. Strelnikov took place.

Over time, the theater acquired its own identity, built a repertoire, and gathered interesting artists into a troupe. During the Great Patriotic War, actors as part of propaganda brigades performed at the fronts in front of soldiers and in hospitals in front of wounded soldiers and officers.

A special place in the creative life of the Ivanovo Musical Comedy Theater is occupied by V. Brushtein’s operettas, which enjoyed great success with the audience and were generously endowed with enthusiastic reviews from the press, not only local, but even the capital. The performances shocked with their plastic expression of poetic speech; even the poets themselves, for example A. Voznesensky, expressed delight in this regard. In 1986, the theater received regional status. And in 1987 it moved to a building belonging to the Palace of Arts, where it is still located.

Theater building

The theater was built on the site of the men's theater, which was founded by the princes of Cherkasy in 1579 in their village of Ivanovo. Initially, all the monastery buildings were wooden, they were dilapidated. In the 19th century, an ensemble of two stone churches appeared in their place - Pokrovsky and Trinity. An almshouse for orphans and widows was built nearby.

Gradually, the village of Ivanovo grew and merged with Voznesensky Posad, resulting in the formation of the city of Ivanovo-Voznesensk. In 1931, the Intercession and Trinity Cathedrals were demolished, and a theater building rose in their place. The architect to design the premises was selected through a competition in which 11 specialists took part. Among their projects was a very original one, the author of which was Ilya Golosov. The layout of the Musical Theater (Ivanovo), which he proposed, resembled a television in its shape. As a result, the design of Alexander Vlasov was chosen, who soon after became the chief architect of Moscow.

Construction of the building was completed in 1940. After 8 years, the theater was renovated, and 20 years later it underwent a large-scale reconstruction. All this happened because the wooden floors had rotted, the foundation was weak, and it was constantly being washed away by the stream. In 1987, another reconstruction took place, after which the theater added halls - now there are four of them - for the musical theater, for the drama theatre, for the puppet theater and for the Green night club. Now the building bears the proud name of the Palace of Arts.

In 2008, a new renovation was carried out, now the floors and ceilings were replaced. In 2009, the foyer underwent restoration, and new, modern sound equipment was purchased. In 2011, the facade was updated, the chairs were replaced, and new lighting equipment was purchased. The Musical Theater (Ivanovo) accommodates just under one and a half thousand spectators. The layout of the hall is presented in this article below.

Musical theater in Ivanovo

The Musical Theater in Ivanovo is one of the oldest theaters of this genre in Russia. In 1930, a traveling troupe of various operetta artists was created in the Ivanovo region, which gave interesting performances and concerts in villages and towns of the region. This group was destined to become the base for the organization of the Ivanovo Theater of Musical Comedy. Theater policy at that time foresaw the transition to a stationary theater regime. The management of theatrical enterprises of the Ivanovo region invited the team to transform into a moving musical comedy theater. The theater was transformed in September 1931, as a result of which it was named the “Ivanovo-Voznesensk Theater of Musical Comedy”.

For three years, the theater was forced to lead a wandering lifestyle, while serving the Ivanovo region, and also occasionally traveling outside the region. The Executive Committee of the Regional Council and the Presidium of the Regional Trade Council made a decision in December 1934 to merge the theater of the Regional Trade Council with the Regional Drama Theater and organized a regional musical comedy theater. The theater premises are located in the city of Ivanovo.

The theater's debut on the new stage took place in March 1935, where they demonstrated the play "Harry Domella" (production and libretto by V. Lensky, music by A. Ashkenazy). A very important event in the life of the city was the opening of a new musical comedy theater. Unfortunately, a number of the first performances showed that the cultural level of the theater was not at the proper level. In connection with such problems, measures were taken to recruit new, more experienced and strong creative forces. The 1935-1936 season was opened with a new composition group, which included: Z. D. Gabrilyants, M. Matveeva, M. Toporkova, K. Konstan.

Awarded the "Golden Mask" award ("Khanuma" by G. Kancheli, "Best male role in an operetta/musical" - A. Menzhinsky, 1999).

The Ivanovo Musical Theater was built on the site of a destroyed monastery in the 30s of the 20th century. He gained popularity immediately. Today his repertoire includes operettas, ballets, revues, vaudevilles, musical fairy tales for children, etc.

History of the theater

The Ivanovo Musical Theater is located in the city center, on A.S. Pushkin Square. It was built in 1940. The author of the building's design was the chief architect of Moscow, Alexander Vlasov. He was selected through a competition.

But the architect's project was implemented unsuccessfully. When he arrived and saw what had been done to his brainchild, he refused to continue working on it. The foundation was weak, plus it was being undermined by water. The building was repeatedly corrected and repaired, which finally weakened it.

In the year 1940, Ivanovsky underwent large-scale reconstruction. The auditorium became much smaller; instead of 2500, it began to accommodate 1500 people.

In 1947, a significant event for the theater took place. Ivanovsky music director was the first in the entire Union to stage Isaac Dunaevsky's operetta "Free Wind". The performance immediately became popular and ran for a long time with constant sell-outs.

In the 50s, the theater troupe was replenished with young artists.

In 1960 there was again a major reconstruction. It ended in 1987. After her, the theater acquired the appearance it has now. The number of auditoriums has increased, now there are four instead of one. And in addition to the musical theater, there is a puppet and drama theater here. Now it is the Palace of Arts.

In 1986 the theater was reorganized. Its name and status have changed. From theater it turned into music. A new generation of wonderful artists appeared in his troupe.

Over the years of its existence, the Ivanovo Musical Theater has acquired several generations of loyal fans.

From the first years to this day, there has been a tradition here - a variety of genres in the repertoire. The transformation from musical comedy to musical obligated the theater to stage ballets and operas in addition to operettas, vaudevilles and musicals.

The year 1998 was significant. The theater became a nominee for the Golden Mask award. The production of "Khanuma" was nominated for the award. The theater then became a laureate of the Golden Mask. The performer of the role of Hakob received it in the category "Best Actor in an Operetta - Musical". "Khanuma" is still in the theater's repertoire.
